Profile

A slow left arm orthodox spinner, Neil McGarrel was a key component of the Guyana bowling attack. Nicknamed \"Beast\", McGarrel sent down overs and overs for Guyana with equal guile and vigour. He made his ODI debut for West Indies in April 1998 against New Zealand. He bowled a tidy spell but produced a more significant contribution on the field, effecting three run outs and grabbing a catch.

When Guyana's regular opener, Nicholas de Groot was unfit to bat in the second essay in Antigua in 2000, McGarrel volunteered to open the batting. Withstanding Curtly Ambrose, McGarrel hit a gutsy fifty, providing copious proof of his commitment to the side. McGarrel was handed his maiden Test appearance in 2001 against South Africa. He immediately caught the eye, bagging a 4-fer in the first innings but West Indies crashed to an emphatic loss. Unfortunately his Test career just spanned over 4 Tests, all in 2001. He figured in a few more ODIs though before being cast into the wilderness.

He served Guyana till 2008 but with hopes of an international recall becoming as good as nothing, he shifted base to USA in search of more opportunities. The tweaker represented USA in the 2013/14 ICC T20 Qualifiers.
