Australia, in their fourth attempt, register their first ODI win at the Optus Stadium. The experienced duo of Starc and Hazlewood set the tone upfront and Australia never allowed their opponents to make a comeback into this contest. They ticked a lot of boxes on the way. Mitch Owen, on debut, picked a couple of wickets. Kuhnemann bowled a tight spell after the rain interruptions even when the Indian batters were trying to be aggressive. With the bat, Philippe looked in good touch and Marsh batted at a good tempo to ace the chase. For the visitors, it was a tough game. They were below-par with the bat. Can the experienced batting line-up step up in the next match? The action shifts to Adelaide and tune in on Thursday (23rd October) to the 2nd ODI. Until then, it's goodbye from all of us.

Mitchell Marsh | Player of the Match: The weather played its part today. Big thanks to all the crowd that stuck around. I know these days can be really frustrating, but nice to get a win. It's always nice to win at home. I love playing for Australia. (On the run-chase) It was swinging around a little bit. We knew that was going to be the case for both teams, so a little bit of a challenge to get through there. Proud of the way our young guys came out and took the game on and got us over. (Josh Philippe) Came out and made it look very easy, didn't he? It's fun to get young kids coming in. They're not necessarily young kids, the young guys coming in. You just want them to have fun and enjoy it. In one-day cricket, we don't get to play in front of the big crowds all the time, so I said them to really enjoy it.

Shubman Gill | India Captain - When you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you're always trying to play a catch-up game (on the rain delays and the poor start). A lot of learnings for us from this game and a lot of positives for us as well. We were defending 130 and we took the game, not till the very end, but pretty deep. We were very satisfied with that. We are very fortunate (on the crowd support). The fans turned up in huge numbers and hopefully they'll be able to cheer us on at Adelaide as well.

This is India’s first defeat in ODIs in 2025, and their run of eight successive wins have come to an end with this.

Indian captains losing their first match in charge in each of the three formats:
Virat Kohli
Shubman Gill

The DLS target was lowered to 131 and the Aussies were pretty clinical in their run-chase. Head got going with a couple of boundaries but his innings was cut short by Arshdeep. Short failed to make an impact coming in at three. But captain Marsh played a good knock carrying his form in white-ball cricket. While he hit three sixes and two fours in the first 10 overs, he curbed his natural instincts post that. Josh Philippe gave him good company and the duo forged a 55-run stand. Renshaw looked a bit nervy but he hit a couple of boundaries and Marsh remained unbeaten on 46 as the Aussies hunted down the target with 29 balls to spare.

19:09 Local Time, 11:09 GMT, 16:39 IST: Australia go 1-0 up in the 3-match series with a convincing win in this rain-curtailed game. Opting to bowl on a bouncy Perth deck, their new ball pacers were on the money from the word go. Hazlewood and Starc were disciplined and nipped out Rohit and Kohli respectively cheaply. Gill was strangled down leg and India lost their top three inside nine overs. The rain stoppages didn't help India's cause as they failed to gather any momentum. Hazlewood's quota of overs was finished at one go and he finished with impressive figures of 7-2-22-2 which also included the wicket of Shreyas Iyer. 30s from Axar and Rahul and a couple of sixes from Nitish Kumar in the final over saw India get to 136 in 26 overs.
