How to read a cricket points table

A points table is the scoreboard of a tournament — it tells you, at a glance, who is on course to qualify and who is running out of time. But the column that decides most close finishes is not points at all; it is Net Run Rate (NRR). Understanding both is the difference between watching a league and actually following the race.

What the columns mean

• M (Matches): games played so far.
• W / L: wins and losses. In most limited-overs leagues a win is worth 2 points and a loss 0.
• Tied / No Result: usually worth 1 point each — abandoned games split the points, which can quietly reshape a table after a rain-hit round.
• PTS (Points): the primary ranking column. Teams are ordered by points first.
• NRR (Net Run Rate): the tie-breaker when two teams are level on points.

Net Run Rate, explained simply

Net Run Rate measures how quickly a team scores compared with how quickly it concedes. It is worked out across the whole tournament, not a single match:

A positive NRR means you generally outscore opponents; a negative NRR means the opposite. One important rule often surprises fans: when a side is bowled out, the calculation uses the team's full quota of overs (for example 20 in a T20, 50 in an ODI), not the overs they actually batted. That is why losing cheaply hurts NRR far more than the scoreline alone suggests, and why teams sometimes chase a small target quickly even when the win is already secure — every over saved nudges their NRR upward.

How qualification usually works

In a typical round-robin league, the top teams on the table advance to the knockout or playoff stage. When points are tied at the cut-off line, NRR breaks the tie; if NRR is also level, head-to-head results between the tied teams are used. This is why a result that looks meaningless in the final round — a heavy win by a mid-table side, say — can knock a higher team out on run rate.
