Abhishek and Samson register an unwanted first for India's openers in Belfast

India's chase in the second T20I against Ireland in Belfast could hardly have begun in more calamitous fashion, as openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma both fell for golden ducks inside the very first over. The double blow handed the pair an unwanted slice of history and set the tone for a chastening defeat that completed Ireland's stunning series sweep.

Chasing a modest 155 at the Civil Service Cricket Club, India were sunk before they could draw breath, with the in-form Jai Moondra striking twice in the opening over to leave the visitors reeling.

An unwanted first

The dismissals etched Samson and Abhishek into the record books for the wrong reasons. They became the first Indian opening pair in history to be dismissed for golden ducks — out first ball — in the same T20I.

While two Indian openers being dismissed for ducks in the same T20I had happened before, on no previous occasion had both fallen to the very first ball they faced. It made for a grim statistical milestone in a match India needed to win to keep their series alive.

How it unfolded

Moondra, the Indian-origin Irish left-arm pacer who had tormented India in the series opener, struck with the first ball of the chase. A venomous delivery curled back in to trap Samson plumb in front, the umpire's finger going up without hesitation.

Three balls later, Abhishek followed. He could only steer a catch that Matt Holland claimed with a spectacular running effort from the third-man region, watching the ball over his shoulder to complete a brilliant take and hand Moondra two wickets in his opening over.

The wider record context

The double strike also placed the match among rare company. It was only the fourth time in the entire history of T20Is that both openers in an innings had been dismissed for golden ducks — underlining just how unusual India's start was.

Among previous Indian opening pairs to be out for ducks in the same T20I were Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane against Pakistan in 2016, and Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal against South Africa in 2023. But Samson and Abhishek's simultaneous first-ball dismissals set their entry apart.

A grim landmark for Abhishek

For Abhishek Sharma, the duck carried an additional unwanted note. It was his sixth duck in T20Is in the 2026 calendar year, lifting him to second on the list of batters with the most ducks in a calendar year in the format among full-member nations.

It was a sobering statistic for a player otherwise known for his explosive strokeplay, and a sign of a difficult patch at the top of the order.

The misery did not end there. Moondra returned to castle captain Shreyas Iyer cheaply with a ripper that crashed into the stumps, before Ishan Kishan was run out in unfortunate fashion off a direct hit by Ross Adair.

Those blows left India reeling at 35 for four inside the powerplay, the chase in tatters and the platform laid for Ireland's famous victory. Despite a fighting half-century from Tilak Varma, India ultimately fell agonisingly short, losing by a single run.
