ICC confirms qualification pathway for cricket's historic LA28 Olympic return

Cricket's long-awaited return to the Olympic Games has taken a major step forward, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirming the qualification pathway for the LA28 Games in Los Angeles. How qualification works

Five of the six qualification places in each event will be decided through a combination of existing ICC events and the ICC T20I rankings, in line with the sport's approved Future Tours Programme structure. The sixth and final place in both the men's and women's competitions will be determined through the newly introduced ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

That qualifier will feature eight nations in each event — the next highest-ranked teams on the relevant ICC T20I rankings who have not already secured their place at the Games.

The first four women's teams

The Women's T20 World Cup 2026 has already confirmed the first participants for LA28. Australia, Great Britain (competing via England), India and South Africa have all qualified by virtue of being the highest-placed eligible finishers from Oceania, Europe, Asia and Africa respectively, with the continental places capped at one per region.

Australia and England underlined their credentials by remaining unbeaten to reach the semifinals, while South Africa qualified through their strong showing. Reigning ODI world champions India secured Asia's quota despite their T20 World Cup campaign ending earlier than they had hoped.

The unique case of the West Indies

One distinctive element of the pathway concerns the West Indies. As a composite ICC member representing multiple Caribbean nations, rather than a single IOC-recognised National Olympic Committee, the West Indies cannot directly compete at the Olympics or claim a quota place.

To address this, the ICC has provided a route: should the West Indies finish among the highest-ranked teams not already qualified by the end of 2026, a dedicated Caribbean Qualifier will be staged to determine which individual nation progresses to the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

The host nation factor

As hosts, the USA are eligible to qualify for both the men's and women's events, subject to appearing in the top 15 of the relevant ICC T20I rankings during the qualification period. If the USA fail to meet that criteria, the spot will instead be reallocated to the highest-placed non-qualified nation in the rankings, ensuring the place is not lost.
