Gous and Smith tons help Freedom script the highest successful chase in T20 history

Washington Freedom produced one of the greatest run chases in the history of the game, gunning down a mammoth 267 to defeat MI New York by six wickets in Eliminator 1 of Major League Cricket 2026 at the Oakland Coliseum. Powered by breathtaking centuries from Andries Gous and captain Steve Smith, Freedom scripted the highest successful run chase in the history of T20 cricket, keeping their title hopes alive in the most spectacular fashion.

In a run-soaked contest that witnessed a record 51 sixes and three individual hundreds — a first in men's T20 cricket — Freedom overhauled a target that had looked utterly beyond them at the halfway stage.

Pooran's blitz sets up a mammoth total

The fireworks began early, with MI New York piling on the runs after being asked to bat first. Quinton de Kock laid a solid platform with a fluent 51 from 24 balls, but it was Nicholas Pooran who stole the show in the first innings.

The left-hander was simply sensational, racing to the fastest century in MLC history off just 31 deliveries. He eventually made 106 from 33 balls, striking at an outrageous rate, while Kieron Pollard produced another explosive cameo — a 25-ball 64 that saw him become just the second player in T20 history to reach 1,000 sixes.

Ravindra's crucial fightback

With MINY cruising at 211 for three after just 13 overs, a total near 300 looked well within reach. That it did not materialise owed everything to an unlikely bowling hero in Rachin Ravindra.

The left-armer triggered an impressive comeback, claiming four crucial wickets for 28 or 29 runs while bowling the 14th, 16th, 18th and 20th overs to stem the flow. Ben Dwarshuis chipped in with two, and although Trent Boult's late boundaries lifted MINY to 266 for nine, Ravindra's intervention had handed Freedom a glimmer of hope.

A nightmare start to the chase

Any optimism appeared misplaced when Freedom's chase began disastrously. Left-arm spinning all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, given the new ball, struck twice inside his first three overs to reduce the chasing side to 10 for two.

With a Himalayan task made even steeper, a target of 267 looked firmly out of reach. From that precarious position, however, the match was transformed by two batters in irresistible form.

The stand that rewrote the record books

What followed was a partnership for the ages. Gous and Smith came together and produced a stunning, unbroken assault, adding 241 runs for the third wicket off just 89 balls — the joint second-biggest partnership for any wicket in all T20 cricket.

Both raced to their centuries in only 40 balls, and there was no let-up from either end. The alliance eclipsed the previous highest third-wicket stand in T20s, the 213 shared by Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav in 2019, as the pair systematically dismantled the MINY attack.

Gous makes history

Wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous was the more destructive of the two, blasting a career-best 132 from just 51 deliveries, an innings featuring 12 sixes and 10 fours. In the process, he became the first American batter to score a century in MLC history.

His onslaught was highlighted by a colossal 29-run 13th over off Romario Shepherd, which included four sixes and a four. MI New York's cause was not helped by some sloppy fielding, with four catching chances put down and a run-out missed in the space of a few overs.

Smith leads from the front

At the other end, captain Steve Smith was every bit as commanding, anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 110 from 48 balls, laced with nine sixes and seven fours. It was the fastest T20 hundred of the former Australia captain's career, reached in just 40 deliveries.

By the time Gous fell in the 17th over, Freedom needed only a handful of runs, and Glenn Maxwell applied the finishing touch with an unbeaten seven from two balls. Freedom reached 270 for four in 18.4 overs, completing the chase with eight balls to spare.

A new benchmark in T20 cricket

The victory set a new benchmark for the format. Freedom's chase surpassed the previous record held by Punjab Kings, who had chased down 265 against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026 earlier this year, itself a record at the time.

The match also entered the record books for its sheer carnage, with 51 sixes struck across the two innings and three centuries scored in a single men's T20 game for the very first time — a fitting statistical footnote to an extraordinary night in Oakland.

What it means

The result eliminated the reigning champions MI New York, ending their title defence despite Pooran's heroics. For Washington Freedom, survival keeps their campaign alive as they progress to Eliminator 2.

There they will face the San Francisco Unicorns, with the winner of that clash earning the right to take on the Los Angeles Knight Riders — already through to the final — in the MLC 2026 title decider.

This was a night that will be remembered as one of the finest in T20 history, defined by a record-shattering chase and a partnership of breathtaking quality. Pooran's brilliance would have won almost any other game, but it was overshadowed by the combined genius of Gous and Smith.
