Big guns return, a rookie earns his stripes: India name their squad for the Sri Lanka Tests

India have named a 15-member squad for their upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, blending the return of two experienced match-winners with the reward of a long-serving domestic performer. Spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja are both back in the fold, while uncapped Madhya Pradesh off-spinner Saransh Jain earned the headline-grabbing maiden call-up.

The big guns return

The most significant boost comes with the return of Bumrah and Jadeja, both of whom had been unavailable for India's one-off Test against Afghanistan earlier in the year. Their inclusion adds enormous experience, quality and control to the side.

Bumrah had injured his left knee ahead of the final ODI against England at Lord's, an impact injury that ruled him out of the series decider. Sudharsan, meanwhile, was in exceptional form against Sri Lanka A, and India will be hopeful both pass their respective assessments before the team departs.

Jain's well-earned breakthrough

The feel-good story of the announcement is undoubtedly the maiden call-up for Saransh Jain. The 33-year-old off-spinning all-rounder has been rewarded for years of consistent domestic excellence, boasting 188 first-class wickets and more than 2,200 runs across his career.

His selection was prompted by the absence of Washington Sundar, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained during the ODI series in England. Jain's recent form on the India A tour of Sri Lanka — where he claimed six wickets and made an unbeaten 70 in one match — coupled with the presence of several left-handers in Sri Lanka's line-up, made him an astute choice.

Sundar and others miss out

Sundar's injury is one of several to have disrupted India's planning. The all-rounder is expected to miss at least the first Test, with his availability for the second dependent on his recovery.

He is not alone on the sidelines, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana — both nursing injuries — also unavailable for the tour. The spate of fitness concerns has been a recurring theme for India in recent weeks, prompting captain Shubman Gill to call publicly for improved fitness across the squad.

Cover on standby

To guard against further disruption, the selectors have kept reinforcements in mind. Although no official standby players were named, Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur and Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi are understood to remain in contention should Bumrah be unable to recover in time.

Both featured for India A on the recent tour of Sri Lanka, giving them valuable exposure to the conditions and keeping them firmly in the frame as potential replacements.

The WTC context

This series is India's first assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle, following a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to South Africa in November. Before that setback, India had drawn a hard-fought five-Test series 2-2 in England and beaten the West Indies 2-0 at home.

India currently sit fifth in the WTC standings, just above sixth-placed Sri Lanka, making a strong start to the cycle all the more important. They will also be chasing a third successive Test series win in Sri Lanka, and a fifth in a row against the island nation overall.

The schedule

The first Test will be played at the Galle International Stadium from August 15 to 19, before the action shifts to the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo for the second Test from August 23 to 27.

Ahead of the series, India will play a four-day practice match in Colombo starting on August 7, offering the players valuable preparation time and a chance to acclimatise to the conditions before the WTC campaign gets under way.
