A record Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could not achieve

The milestone places Gill ahead of two of India's most successful recent Test captains in one particular statistical category. Neither Virat Kohli nor Rohit Sharma managed to score 1,000 runs as India captain in a single edition of the World Test Championship.

Kohli's leadership era produced several memorable batting performances, while Rohit also enjoyed a highly productive period as captain. However, Gill's consistency during the current WTC cycle has allowed him to reach the four-figure mark faster than either of his predecessors.

Gill joins an elite WTC captaincy group

Gill is now the fifth captain overall to score at least 1,000 runs in one WTC cycle. The list includes some of the most productive batters to lead their countries in the championship.

Joe Root remains the benchmark, having accumulated 1,968 runs as captain in a single WTC edition. Babar Azam, Dimuth Karunaratne and Ben Stokes are the other captains who have previously crossed the 1,000-run barrier during one WTC cycle.

Gill's inclusion among those names adds another layer of significance to his relatively young captaincy career.

The fifty also brings another record

Gill's contribution in Colombo was not limited to the WTC milestone. His fifty also moved him ahead of Virat Kohli for the number of 50-plus scores recorded during the first 18 innings of an Indian Test captaincy career.

Gill now has eight 50-plus scores in those first 18 innings as captain. Kohli had seven during the same stage of his captaincy, while Vijay Hazare had six.

Only MS Dhoni and Sunil Gavaskar remain ahead of Gill on that particular list, with 11 and nine 50-plus scores respectively.

From promising batter to Test leader

Gill's rapid progress has been one of the defining features of India's recent Test transition. The 26-year-old took over the captaincy during the England series and immediately found himself under enormous expectations.
