Sikandar Raza to lead Zimbabwe in Namibia tri-series as Richard Ngarava misses out

Zimbabwe have announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I tri-series in Namibia, with experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza once again entrusted with the captaincy. The tournament will also feature hosts Namibia and South Africa and will provide Zimbabwe with an important opportunity to test their squad in unfamiliar conditions.

The competition begins in Windhoek on August 28, with the three teams scheduled to meet twice before the final on September 6. Zimbabwe's opening match is against South Africa on August 29, followed by a meeting with Namibia two days later.

Raza continues as Zimbabwe captain

Sikandar Raza remains at the centre of Zimbabwe's T20I plans. The experienced all-rounder will lead a squad that has largely retained the core of the group used during their recent international assignments.

Brian Bennett, Ryan Burl and Brad Evans are among the established names included, while wicketkeeper-batter Tadiwanashe Marumani also retains his place. Zimbabwe have opted for continuity rather than making sweeping changes ahead of the Windhoek tournament.

The decision gives Raza a settled group with a combination of experience and younger players to work with during the tri-series.

Graeme Cremer returns to the squad

One of the notable additions is experienced spinner Graeme Cremer, who returns to the national setup after recovering from a left-arm injury. The absence of Cremer from recent home series had reduced Zimbabwe's options in the spin department.

His return provides Raza with another experienced bowling option and could prove particularly useful depending on the conditions in Namibia.

Cremer has taken five wickets in six matches over the past year, and Zimbabwe will hope his experience can translate into a stronger performance during the tri-series.

Richard Ngarava remains unavailable

The biggest concern for Zimbabwe is the continued absence of senior fast bowler Richard Ngarava. The pacer has not recovered sufficiently from a lower-back problem and will remain under the supervision of Zimbabwe's medical team during his rehabilitation.

Ngarava originally aggravated the injury during Zimbabwe's T20 World Cup campaign in March. Although he subsequently went through rehabilitation and returned for the T20I series against India, his recovery was delayed again after the home series.

His absence removes one of Zimbabwe's most experienced pace options from the attack at a time when the team is preparing to face two competitive sides.

Chivanga also misses the tournament

Zimbabwe will also be without Tanaka Chivanga. The fast bowler recently underwent surgery after suffering an Achilles tendon injury during a training session.

The absence of both Ngarava and Chivanga leaves Zimbabwe with fewer experienced options in the pace department. Brad Evans and Blessing Muzarabani are therefore likely to carry much of the responsibility with the ball.

Newman Nyamhuri has also been included, giving Zimbabwe another pace option as they prepare for the conditions in Windhoek.

Kundai Matigimu receives a call-up

Kundai Matigimu is another player to attract attention in the squad. The seamer has only one Test appearance for Zimbabwe but has now been included in the T20I group for the tri-series.

His inclusion gives the selectors an opportunity to assess another bowling option at international level. With Ngarava unavailable, Matigimu could become an important part of the team's plans depending on the conditions and combination selected for each match.

Zimbabwe's batting core remains intact

Zimbabwe have kept several of their leading T20I batters together. Brian Bennett is expected to play a major role at the top of the order, while Raza remains an important contributor with both bat and ball.

Tadiwanashe Marumani has also developed into a useful option in the batting group, while Ryan Burl provides experience in the middle order and additional bowling ability.

Ben Curran, Wessly Madhevere, Innocent Kaia and Dion Myers complete a group that gives Zimbabwe several alternatives when selecting their final XI.

Kaia remains part of the plans

Innocent Kaia has retained his place despite limited opportunities in Zimbabwe's recent playing elevens. He has made 19 T20I appearances and scored 290 runs, but remains outside the first-choice XI on many occasions.

His continued selection suggests the team management still sees value in having an experienced backup option for the top and middle order.

The tri-series could provide Kaia with another opportunity to push for a more regular place in the side.

Zimbabwe face a difficult challenge

The competition will test Zimbabwe against two sides with contrasting strengths. Namibia will have home conditions on their side, while South Africa bring considerable depth despite fielding a younger squad for the tour.

Zimbabwe's record in Namibia provides some encouragement. They have won six of their 11 T20Is played in the country, showing that they are capable of adapting successfully to the conditions.

Their record against South Africa is less encouraging, however, with Zimbabwe still searching for their first T20I victory over the Proteas in nine meetings.

Windhoek presents an important opportunity

The tri-series gives Zimbabwe an opportunity to build momentum before their next major international assignments. Playing against strong opposition away from home should provide valuable experience for several members of the squad.

The tournament is also an important chance for players returning from injury or fighting for regular selection to make an impression.

For Raza and the senior players, the challenge will be to provide leadership while helping Zimbabwe's younger members adapt to the demands of the competition.

A balanced squad despite injury setbacks

Zimbabwe's squad contains a useful mixture of established international players, returning names and emerging talent. Raza, Burl, Muzarabani and Evans provide experience, while Bennett, Marumani, Nyamhuri and Matigimu represent the next generation of Zimbabwe's T20I group.

The absence of Ngarava is undoubtedly a setback, particularly because the pacer remains an important part of Zimbabwe's bowling plans when fully fit. However, the squad still contains enough variety for the management to construct different combinations across the tournament.

The road ahead

Zimbabwe will begin their tri-series campaign against South Africa in Windhoek on August 29 before taking on Namibia on August 31. The teams will meet twice during the league phase before the final on September 6.

For Zimbabwe, the immediate priority will be to adapt quickly to the conditions and make the most of their experienced core. Raza's leadership, Bennett's batting and the pace combination of Evans and Muzarabani will be particularly important.

With Ngarava and Chivanga unavailable, the tournament also provides an opportunity for Zimbabwe's other bowlers to step forward. A strong showing in Windhoek would give the Chevrons valuable confidence and further strengthen their T20I plans.
