Tilak Varma Stands Firm but East Zone Strengthen Grip on Duleep Trophy Final

East Zone moved another step closer to Duleep Trophy glory after another strong day in the final against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Having piled up a massive 708 in their first innings, East Zone's bowlers struck regularly on the third day. South Zone ended the day at 242/6, leaving them 466 runs behind with four wickets remaining.

Tilak Varma Provides South Zone With Hope

Amid South Zone's struggles, captain Tilak Varma produced a determined unbeaten half-century. The left-hander remained at the crease at the close of play on 56, showing considerable patience against an East Zone attack that kept creating pressure.

Tilak brought up his fifty from 123 deliveries and concentrated on occupying the crease rather than taking unnecessary risks. His resistance gave South Zone a slim chance of extending the contest into the fourth day.

South Zone Start Day Three Positively

South Zone began the morning session with N Jagadeesan and Ricky Bhui at the crease. Jagadeesan immediately looked positive, finding two boundaries in Mukesh Kumar's opening over.

However, Bhui's stay ended in frustrating circumstances. A delivery from Mukesh moved in after pitching and appeared to be heading down the leg side, but Bhui's attempted glance produced an edge through to the wicketkeeper.

DRS Gives East Zone An Early Breakthrough

The on-field decision initially went in Bhui's favour, but East Zone opted for a review. The replay confirmed that the ball had taken the edge, allowing the fielding side to overturn the original decision.

It was an important early breakthrough because South Zone had hoped to build a substantial partnership at the start of the third day's play.

Padikkal Takes Charge

Devdutt Padikkal quickly settled into his innings and began finding boundaries through the leg side. His timing through midwicket was particularly effective as he looked comfortable against the East Zone bowlers.

Mohammed Shami eventually provided East Zone with the breakthrough they needed. After lunch, the veteran pacer produced a delivery that jagged back into Rasheed and trapped him leg before wicket.

The wicket prevented South Zone from establishing the kind of long partnership they needed to challenge East Zone's huge first-innings advantage.

Padikkal Misses A Big Opportunity

Padikkal was then dismissed after reaching a well-set position. Despite having fielders placed on the boundary, he attempted a pickup shot and found the man stationed at deep square leg.

His dismissal was particularly costly because he had already passed fifty and looked capable of batting for a much longer period.

Tilak And Smaran Try To Rebuild

With South Zone in trouble, Tilak joined Smaran Ravichandran in the middle. The pair adopted a more cautious approach and managed to spend more than 100 deliveries together.

The partnership gave South Zone a period of stability and allowed Tilak to settle into the conditions without taking unnecessary risks.

Shami Makes Another Impact

East Zone captain Vaibhav Sooryavanshi brought Shami back before the tea interval, and the move produced another important wicket.

Smaran attempted a drive and appeared to miss the ball, but Ishan Kishan behind the stumps was convinced that there had been a faint edge. Kishan successfully persuaded Sooryavanshi to review the decision, and UltraEdge confirmed contact with the bat.

Tilak Finds His Rhythm

After Smaran's dismissal, Tilak continued to show impressive composure. He was joined by experienced all-rounder Shreyas Gopal, and the pair focused on rotating the strike and defending the good deliveries.

With the field spread out, Tilak was able to pick up singles while occasionally finding boundaries when East Zone offered him scoring opportunities.

Gopal Provides Valuable Support

Gopal played the supporting role effectively as South Zone tried to survive the final session. The pair resisted the East Zone attack and ensured that no further wickets fell for a significant period.

East Zone appeared increasingly keen to introduce the second new ball, hoping that additional movement and pace would break the partnership.

East Zone eventually got the breakthrough they were looking for just before the close. Gopal attempted to drive a well-tossed delivery from the bowling attack but hit it straight back towards the bowler.

Shami was the standout bowler for East Zone on the third day. He finished with figures of 2/11, repeatedly troubling the South Zone batters with his accuracy and movement.

His experience became particularly valuable on a surface that was still largely good for batting but occasionally produced deliveries that stayed low or moved unexpectedly.

East Zone Still 466 Runs Ahead

At 242/6, South Zone remain 466 runs behind East Zone's mammoth first-innings total. They therefore face an enormous task if they are to avoid conceding a decisive first-innings advantage.

The gap also means East Zone remain firmly in control of the final, particularly with South Zone having only four wickets left.

East Zone's 708 Put Them In Command

East Zone's dominance began with their batting performance. Ishan Kishan led the way with a remarkable 270, while Kumar Kushagra added 101.

Shikhar Mohan scored 85 and Abhimanyu Easwaran contributed 72, helping East Zone become only the third team to score more than 700 in a first-class match in Chennai.

Kishan's marathon innings proved to be the foundation of East Zone's commanding position. The East Zone captain batted for more than eight hours and struck 30 boundaries and seven sixes during his 270.

His partnership with Kushagra added 230 runs and ensured South Zone's bowlers were unable to make significant inroads during the second half of the East Zone innings.

South Zone Need A Major Fightback

South Zone now face a difficult task on the fourth morning. Tilak's unbeaten presence provides some hope, but the team needs a substantial partnership before it can even think about reducing the enormous deficit.

East Zone, meanwhile, will be looking to finish the remaining four wickets quickly and put themselves in an even stronger position to force a result.

Tilak's 56 not out has been one of the few positives for South Zone. The captain has shown the temperament required in a difficult situation and has refused to throw his wicket away.
