Abhishek Sharma’s Explosive 82 Overshadows Omarzai Fightback as India Take Series Lead

Abhishek Sharma delivered another spectacular display of T20 batting as India opened their three-match series against Afghanistan with a dominant seven-wicket victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Afghanistan appeared to be heading towards a disappointing total after collapsing to 43/5, but Azmatullah Omarzai produced a superb recovery effort to take the visitors to 156/8. His unbeaten 64 gave Afghanistan something to defend, but India's response was far too powerful.

Afghanistan Collapse Early

India won the toss and chose to bowl first, immediately putting Afghanistan under pressure. Jasprit Bumrah struck in the opening over by removing Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck.

Arshdeep Singh then joined the attack with wickets at regular intervals, while Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy also kept the Afghan batters under pressure. Afghanistan slipped to 43/5 before the innings had properly settled.

Omarzai Changes the Momentum

With Afghanistan in serious trouble, Omarzai took responsibility for rebuilding the innings. He found an aggressive partner in Mohammad Nabi, and together they transformed the visitors' position.

The pair added 83 runs for the sixth wicket, mixing controlled batting with attacking strokes to move Afghanistan beyond the danger zone.

Nabi Provides Valuable Support

Nabi contributed 33 from 27 balls during the recovery partnership. His experience allowed Omarzai to play with greater freedom as Afghanistan looked to build a defendable total.

The partnership was particularly important because Afghanistan had lost half their side for only 43 runs. Without the sixth-wicket stand, the visitors could have been restricted to a much smaller total.

Omarzai Finishes Unbeaten

Omarzai continued attacking towards the end of the innings and brought up his half-century from 39 balls. He remained unbeaten on 64 from 44 deliveries, including a series of powerful sixes late in the innings.

His final-over assault helped Afghanistan finish on 156/8 after 20 overs, giving India a target of 157.

Arshdeep Singh Leads India's Attack

Arshdeep Singh was India's most successful bowler, finishing with 3/19 from his four overs. His control and variation played a major role in preventing Afghanistan from turning their recovery into an even larger total.

Bumrah, Axar and Varun Chakaravarthy also picked up one wicket each as India kept Afghanistan below 160.

Sanju Samson Starts Positively

India's chase began with Sanju Samson showing attacking intent. He struck boundaries early but could not convert the start into a substantial contribution.

Samson fell for 10 after attempting another aggressive shot against Omarzai, giving Afghanistan an early opening in the chase.

Then Abhishek Took Control

Abhishek Sharma immediately changed the complexion of the chase. The left-hander attacked from the outset, repeatedly clearing the boundary and putting Afghanistan's bowlers under immense pressure.

He raced to his half-century in just 22 balls, continuing the aggressive style that has become a defining feature of his T20 batting.

Ishan Kishan Joins the Assault

Ishan Kishan provided excellent support at the other end. Rather than allowing Afghanistan to rebuild pressure after Samson's dismissal, the two left-handers continued attacking.

The pair added 121 runs together at a remarkable rate, effectively removing any doubt about the eventual result.

Afghanistan's Spin Attack Struggles

Afghanistan tried their leading spinners, including Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad, but neither could slow Abhishek's scoring rate significantly.

Rashid conceded boundaries during his opening overs against the aggressive left-hander, while Noor was also attacked as India moved rapidly towards the target.

Abhishek Reaches 82

Abhishek's innings eventually ended at 82 from only 32 deliveries. He struck seven fours and seven sixes, producing one of the most destructive innings of the match.

He had threatened to take India to an even earlier finish, but a mistimed attempt at another maximum resulted in a catch at deep midwicket.

Another Milestone for Abhishek

The explosive knock also saw Abhishek complete 6,000 runs in T20 cricket. He reached the landmark in 3,420 balls, making him the second-fastest player to the milestone by balls faced.

His 22-ball half-century was also his 12th T20I fifty, adding another milestone to an already memorable evening.

Kishan Falls Just Short of Fifty

Ishan Kishan remained aggressive throughout his partnership with Abhishek and finished with 42 from 33 balls.

He fell shortly after Abhishek's dismissal, but by then India needed only a handful of runs. Rashid Khan again completed the catch as Nabi claimed his second wicket.

Shreyas and Tilak Finish the Job

Captain Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma completed the chase without further damage. India reached 157/3 in only 13.4 overs, finishing the match with 38 balls still unused.

The seven-wicket victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

India's Batting Depth Shows Again

The performance demonstrated the attacking depth available to India in the T20 format. Even after losing Samson early, Abhishek and Kishan were able to completely shift the momentum within a few overs.

Afghanistan deserve credit for recovering from 43/5 to 156/8. Omarzai's innings kept them competitive and gave their bowlers a total that could theoretically have created pressure.

However, India's explosive powerplay and the 121-run partnership between Abhishek and Kishan made the target look considerably smaller than it appeared at the halfway stage.

Bumrah's Return Adds Strength

Jasprit Bumrah's return to the T20I side was another positive for India. He made an immediate impact by removing Gurbaz in his first over and finished with 1/26.

With Bumrah combining with Arshdeep, India now have a strong new-ball combination capable of putting opposition batting orders under pressure from the beginning.

The victory gives India the perfect start to the three-match series. The second T20I will be played at the same venue on September 15, with Afghanistan needing an improved performance to keep the series alive.
