Kranti Gaud Fined After Fiery Send-Off in Asia Cup Final

India pacer Kranti Gaud has been penalised by the International Cricket Council following an incident during India's Women's Asia Cup final victory over Sri Lanka in Dubai.

Gaud was fined 10 per cent of her match fee and received one demerit point after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. The incident occurred during the opening over of Sri Lanka's chase, shortly after she dismissed opener Imesha Dulani.

The Incident Happened in the Opening Over

Gaud's first over of the final began with Dulani attacking her through a lap shot for a boundary. The Sri Lankan opener attempted the same type of stroke again a few deliveries later.

This time, however, the shot resulted in her dismissal. Gaud responded with an animated send-off, gesturing towards the pavilion as the batter walked away.

ICC Considered the Gesture a Breach

The ICC determined that Gaud's actions fell under Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

The provision covers language, actions or gestures directed at a dismissed batter that could be considered disparaging or capable of provoking an aggressive reaction.

A Level 1 Offence

The offence was classified as a Level 1 breach. Such violations can result in an official reprimand, a financial penalty of up to half of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

In Gaud's case, the sanction was set at 10 per cent of her match fee along with one demerit point.

Gaud Accepted the Punishment

Gaud admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Supriya Rani Das of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.

Because she accepted the charge and punishment, there was no requirement for a formal disciplinary hearing.

Her First Offence in 24 Months

The one demerit point is Gaud's first disciplinary point during the previous 24-month period.

Demerit points remain on a player's disciplinary record for 24 months. Players who accumulate four or more points during that period can have them converted into suspension points under the ICC system.

India Had Already Taken Control

The incident came in a final that India ultimately dominated. After being asked to bat first, India posted 183/5, powered by Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana.

The opening pair produced a huge partnership before India's bowlers completed the job, restricting Sri Lanka to 111 in their 20 overs.

Gaud's Early Wicket Helped India

Although Gaud's spell became notable for the disciplinary incident, the dismissal itself was an important early breakthrough for India.

Removing Dulani prevented Sri Lanka from building an early platform in a chase that already required a substantial scoring rate.

Sri Lanka Could Not Recover

India's attack continued applying pressure after the early breakthrough. Sri Lanka struggled to establish partnerships and eventually lost wickets at regular intervals.

India's spinners were particularly effective during the middle overs, preventing the defending champions from mounting a serious challenge.

Charani Leads the Bowling Attack

Shree Charani produced the standout bowling performance for India, finishing with four wickets. Her spell played a major role in breaking Sri Lanka's middle and lower order.

Deepti Sharma also contributed with important wickets as India's bowling unit maintained control from the beginning of the chase until the final over.

India Win by 72 Runs

Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for 111, giving India a 72-run victory in the final.

The result secured India's eighth Women's Asia Cup title and completed an impressive tournament for Harmanpreet Kaur's side.

The charge was raised by the match officials overseeing the final. The officiating team included on-field umpires Saleema Imtiaz and Shathira Jakir Jesy, third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Humaira Farah.

The disciplinary process was subsequently handled by the match referee after the incident was reported.

No Suspension for Gaud

The punishment does not result in an immediate suspension. The one demerit point is recorded against Gaud, while the financial penalty represents the direct sanction for this incident.

She therefore remains available for India's future matches, provided she does not accumulate enough disciplinary points to trigger suspension under ICC regulations.

Pakistan Also Received a Penalty

Gaud was not the only player from the tournament to receive a disciplinary sanction after the knockout stage.

Pakistan were fined five per cent of their players' match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate during their semifinal against Sri Lanka. The team was judged to be one over short after allowances were taken into account.

Gaud's Tournament Ends With a Title

Despite the disciplinary issue, Gaud finishes the competition as an Asia Cup champion. India defeated Sri Lanka comprehensively in the final and reclaimed the continental crown.

The young pacer will now have an opportunity to use the experience as a lesson while continuing her development at international level.

The Fine Does Not Change India's Achievement

The incident created a minor disciplinary footnote to what was otherwise a memorable night for Indian women's cricket. The team dominated the final with both bat and ball and completed a convincing title-winning performance.
