Zimbabwe's experienced wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor has entered the history books after surpassing Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar as the player with the longest career span in men's One-Day International cricket.

The landmark came on September 15, 2026, when Taylor was named in Zimbabwe's playing XI for the opening ODI against Australia at Harare Sports Club. By taking the field, the veteran extended his ODI career beyond the remarkable longevity achieved by Tendulkar.

The milestone is specifically about the length of an ODI career rather than the number of matches played or runs scored. Taylor has become the longest-serving player in the history of men's ODIs based on the period between his debut and latest appearance.

Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya remains behind the two legends with an ODI career spanning more than 21 years, while Pakistan's Javed Miandad and Zimbabwe's Sean Williams also feature among the longest-serving players.

Taylor made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe in April 2004 against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo. More than two decades later, he continues to represent his country at the highest level.

Although Taylor has taken the longevity record away from Tendulkar, several of the Indian legend's greatest ODI records remain untouched.

Tendulkar is still the leading run-scorer in ODI history with 18,426 runs and remains the most-capped player in the format with 463 appearances. His career also included the historic achievement of becoming the first batter to score a double century in men's ODI cricket.

Return After International Retirement

Taylor's route to this record has been far from straightforward. He announced his retirement from international cricket in 2021 after a long career with Zimbabwe.
