Renshaw’s Maiden ODI Ton and Ellis’ Five-for Power Australia to 1-0 Lead

Australia began their three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe with a 59-run victory at Harare Sports Club, with Matt Renshaw and Nathan Ellis producing the decisive performances.

Renshaw rescued Australia's innings with his first ODI century, while Ellis returned career-best international figures of 5/31 as Zimbabwe were dismissed for 235 in 45.1 overs. Australia had earlier posted 294/8 after recovering from a shaky start.

Renshaw Produces a Match-Winning Hundred

Renshaw came to the crease with Australia under pressure after several early wickets had fallen. Instead of allowing the innings to unravel, he settled into a rebuilding role before accelerating later in the innings.

The left-hander eventually scored 109 from 94 balls, striking seven fours and three sixes. It was his first century in ODI cricket and his first international hundred since his Test century against Pakistan in 2017.

Australia Lose Four Early Wickets

Australia's decision to bat first did not immediately produce the expected result. Travis Head was dismissed early, while Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly also departed before the innings had reached a comfortable position.

Connolly had made a useful 51 before Sikandar Raza removed him, leaving Renshaw with the responsibility of rebuilding the innings alongside Alex Carey.

Carey and Renshaw Stabilise the Innings

Renshaw and Carey put together a valuable fifth-wicket partnership that helped Australia recover. Carey played the supporting role, while Renshaw gradually increased the scoring rate as he became more comfortable against the Zimbabwe attack.

The pair added 72 runs before Carey's dismissal brought Ollie Peake to the middle.

Another Important Partnership With Peake

Renshaw continued his aggressive approach alongside Peake. The two added another 75 runs, keeping Australia's innings on course for a competitive total.

Peake contributed 30 before being dismissed hit-wicket, while Renshaw continued until he reached the three-figure mark late in the innings.

Nyamhuri Claims Five Wickets for Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe also had a standout bowling performance. Twenty-year-old left-arm seamer Newman Nyamhuri finished with 5/62 from nine overs.

It was his first ODI five-wicket haul and made him only the second Zimbabwean bowler to take five wickets against Australia in men's ODI cricket, according to Cricket Australia.

Australia Finish on 294/8

Renshaw's century helped Australia finish their 50 overs on 294/8. The total gave Zimbabwe a demanding target of 295 on a surface that offered opportunities to both batters and bowlers.

With wickets having fallen regularly during Australia's innings, reaching close to 300 represented a strong recovery for the visitors.

Zimbabwe's Chase Starts Poorly

Zimbabwe's reply immediately encountered trouble. Ben Curran was dismissed for a duck, while Innocent Kaia and Brian Bennett soon followed as Australia's seamers applied pressure.

Nathan Ellis was particularly effective, claiming two wickets in his opening spell and disrupting Zimbabwe's top order with changes of pace and disciplined bowling.

Raza and Ervine Revive Zimbabwe

At 43/4, Zimbabwe needed a substantial partnership to stay in the contest. Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza responded with an important fifth-wicket stand.

The experienced pair added 98 runs, with Ervine playing confidently and Raza providing support as the required rate remained within reach. Both eventually completed half-centuries.

Ervine Makes 59

Ervine top-scored for Zimbabwe with 59 from 60 deliveries. His innings contained six fours and a six and briefly gave the hosts hope of mounting a successful chase.

However, Ellis returned to the attack at a crucial moment and broke the partnership by bowling Ervine, changing the momentum of the innings.

Raza Also Reaches Fifty

Raza made 57 from 76 balls, hitting five fours. His partnership with Ervine had been Zimbabwe's most important period of the chase, but his dismissal soon after Ervine's exit left the home side with too much ground to cover.

Spencer Johnson removed Raza, while Ellis later returned to finish off the lower order.

Ellis Completes His Maiden International Five-for

Ellis finished with 5/31 from 9.1 overs, registering his first five-wicket haul in international cricket.

His wickets came at important stages throughout the chase, preventing Zimbabwe from building another significant partnership after the Raza-Ervine stand.

Zimbabwe were eventually dismissed for 235 in 45.1 overs, leaving Australia with a 59-run victory.

The result gave Australia a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series, while Zimbabwe will now need to win the second ODI to keep the series alive.

A Rare ODI Moment for Raza and Ervine

The match also produced an unusual statistical moment. Raza and Ervine, both aged over 40, became the first pair of batters over the age of 40 to score half-centuries in the same ODI innings.

Their experience helped Zimbabwe recover from a difficult start, although Australia ultimately maintained control of the contest.

Renshaw Adds More Value With the Ball

Renshaw's contribution did not end with his century. The part-time off-spinner also dismissed Brendan Taylor during Zimbabwe's chase.

His all-round contribution made his return to the Australian ODI side particularly significant and gave the visitors another useful bowling option.

The opening victory puts Australia 1-0 ahead in the three-match series. The second ODI will also be played at Harare Sports Club on September 18, followed by the final match at the same venue on September 20.

Zimbabwe Have Positives Despite Defeat

Although Zimbabwe fell short, Nyamhuri's five-wicket performance and the 98-run partnership between Ervine and Raza provided positives for the hosts.

The challenge for Zimbabwe will be to convert those individual contributions into a more complete performance in the next match, particularly with the bat during the powerplay.

Australia's Young Players Make Contributions

Cooper Connolly's 51 and Renshaw's century were important contributions after Australia's top order struggled. Ollie Peake also played a useful supporting innings during the recovery.

The visitors will now look to build on that combination of experienced players and younger talent as the series progresses.

Series Moves to Second ODI

Australia's opening victory gives them an opportunity to seal the three-match series with another win. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, must respond quickly if they are to force the series into a deciding third match.

With Renshaw finding form and Ellis producing his best international figures, Australia's first ODI has provided them with plenty of momentum heading into the second encounter.
