Nigar Sultana Explains T20I Captaincy Exit: “I Want to Focus on My Batting”

Nigar Sultana has explained that her decision to step down as Bangladesh women's T20I captain is primarily about giving greater attention to her batting and overall contribution as a cricketer.

Nigar had informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board of her decision before the Asian Games and will step down from the T20I leadership role after the tournament. She is expected to continue as Bangladesh's ODI captain while focusing on batting and wicketkeeping in the shortest format.

Nigar Rejects Reports of Being Hurt

Following Bangladesh's semifinal defeat to India, Nigar was asked about reports suggesting that a lack of support from the board during difficult periods had influenced her decision.

She rejected that explanation, saying the decision was not made because she felt hurt. Instead, she said she believes she still has more to contribute to Bangladesh as a batter and player and wants to direct more attention towards those responsibilities.

A Four-Year T20I Captaincy Spell

Nigar took over the Bangladesh T20I captaincy in 2022 and has led the side through a significant period in the team's development. During her tenure, Bangladesh recorded their first victory in a Women's T20 World Cup match in a decade when they defeated Scotland in the 2024 tournament.

Her leadership period also included the 2026 T20 World Cup cycle, the Asian Games and several bilateral and multi-team competitions.

Focus Shifts Back to Batting

For Nigar, the decision allows her to concentrate on the two areas in which she can continue contributing directly on the field: batting and wicketkeeping.

She has been an important member of Bangladesh's batting unit for several years, while also carrying the additional responsibilities associated with captaincy. Stepping away from T20I leadership will reduce one part of that workload.

Bangladesh Struggle Against India

Nigar's announcement came shortly after Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat against India in the Asian Games semifinal at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin.

India scored 195/4 after Shafali Verma produced an unbeaten 100 from 49 balls. Bangladesh struggled during the chase and were eventually dismissed for 81 in 15.4 overs, losing by 114 runs.

Nigar Acknowledges Batting Failure

Nigar accepted that Bangladesh's batting was a major reason for the semifinal result. She said the team did not take enough responsibility while chasing such a large total and believed that even one top-order batter staying until the end could have helped Bangladesh add significantly more runs.

She also compared the situation with Sri Lanka's earlier match at the same venue, noting that Sri Lanka had managed to post 107 runs against Pakistan on the surface.

Preparation Also a Concern

The Bangladesh captain also pointed to the team's limited preparation in Japan. Rain affected their schedule and restricted the squad to only around two days of practice.

A planned match against China was washed out, while another proposed warm-up fixture did not take place. Nigar said the lack of training opportunities made preparation more difficult ahead of the knockout stage.

One Final T20I as Captain

Although Bangladesh have been eliminated from gold-medal contention, Nigar is set to captain the team one final time in T20 cricket during the bronze-medal match against Pakistan.

She said Bangladesh have a good record against Pakistan and expressed confidence that the team can respond positively after the semifinal defeat. The bronze-medal match will therefore mark the end of Nigar's T20I captaincy tenure.

ODI Captaincy Continues

Nigar's decision does not represent a complete withdrawal from Bangladesh leadership. She intends to continue as the team's ODI captain while stepping away from the T20I role.

This will allow Bangladesh to retain her experience in the 50-over format while giving her greater freedom to concentrate on her own batting and wicketkeeping during T20Is.

Bangladesh Face a Leadership Transition

Nigar's departure from the T20I captaincy means Bangladesh will need to identify a new leader for the shortest format. The Bangladesh Cricket Board is expected to discuss the appointment after the Asian Games.

At the time of Nigar's announcement, the board had not finalized her successor. The transition will therefore become one of the team's immediate priorities once the Asian Games campaign concludes.

A Significant Chapter Comes to an End

Nigar's four-year stint as T20I captain included both important milestones and challenging periods for Bangladesh. Her leadership helped the side through multiple international tournaments while she continued to contribute as a batter and wicketkeeper.

Her decision now represents a change in responsibilities rather than an exit from international cricket. She remains available as a player and continues to captain Bangladesh in ODIs.

Focus on the Player

For Nigar, the central reason behind the change is straightforward: she wants to devote more energy to her own cricket. By stepping away from T20I captaincy, she can focus more closely on batting, wicketkeeping and her contribution to the team as a player.
