Jonathan Trott Takes Charge of England Lions Ahead of Busy Winter Schedule

Jonathan Trott Named England Lions Head Coach

Jonathan Trott has been appointed as the permanent head coach of the England Lions for the upcoming winter schedule, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed.

The former England international returns to the England setup after spending four years as Afghanistan's head coach. Trott recently stepped in as Lions head coach for their two-match T20 series against Sri Lanka and guided the side to a 2–0 series victory.

His new assignment will see him work closely with players looking to progress towards senior international cricket while managing a demanding winter programme across three countries.

Trott Replaces Andrew Flintoff

Trott takes over the Lions role following Andrew Flintoff's departure from the position in August. Flintoff had been involved with England's development setup before stepping down.

Trott's recent temporary spell with the Lions provided an immediate opportunity for the ECB to assess his involvement with the development group. Following the Sri Lanka T20 series, he has now agreed to take permanent charge for the winter schedule.

Four Years as Afghanistan Head Coach

Trott brings substantial international coaching experience to the Lions job. He became Afghanistan head coach in 2022 and remained in the position for four years.

One of the major achievements during his tenure came at the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of a men's T20 World Cup for the first time in their history.

Trott left the Afghanistan role after the 2026 T20 World Cup and subsequently took on several short-term coaching assignments before returning to the England setup.

Back in the England Setup

Trott is also familiar with England's coaching environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked as an assistant coach with the England men's team.

His experience as both an England player and international coach gives him an understanding of the transition young players must make when moving from domestic and Lions cricket towards the senior international level.

A Former England Test Star

Before moving into coaching, Trott established himself as one of England's leading batters. He played 52 Tests and made 75 appearances for England in white-ball cricket.

Trott was also part of England teams that won three Ashes series. His international career included a Test debut century and a reputation for a technically sound batting style, particularly in the longer format.

He also came through the England Lions programme himself, giving him first-hand experience of how the development pathway can prepare players for international cricket.

Focus on Developing England's Next Generation

The Lions programme is designed to provide an important bridge between county cricket and the England men's senior side. Trott's main responsibility will therefore extend beyond match results to the development and preparation of players who could eventually represent England.

The ECB has confirmed that the upcoming winter programme will have a strong 50-over focus across three tours, while also including red-ball fixtures designed to give players opportunities in different formats.

Trott will work with players who are competing for places in England's future ODI and Test squads, making the winter schedule an important part of the country's wider player-development system.

Three-Country Winter Programme

The England Lions will have a demanding schedule under Trott. The first assignment is a tour of the West Indies beginning on October 27 and running until November 21, 2026.

The Lions will then travel to South Africa for a programme running from November 25 to December 23, featuring ODI and first-class cricket.

The final leg of the winter schedule will take place in Sri Lanka from February 18 to March 14, 2027, again combining limited-overs and first-class fixtures.

Trott's Immediate Challenge

Trott's task will be to balance competitive cricket with the long-term development of England's next group of international players. The Lions schedule provides opportunities for players to gain experience in overseas conditions and across multiple formats.

His recent work with the group means he already has familiarity with several members of the Lions setup. The successful Sri Lanka T20 series also gives him an early understanding of the players available to him.

A New Chapter in Trott's Coaching Career

The England Lions appointment represents another important stage in Trott's coaching career. After gaining four years of experience leading Afghanistan at international level, he now returns to England to work within the country's development pathway.

With three overseas tours scheduled over the coming months, Trott will have plenty of opportunities to influence England's emerging talent. His first-hand experience of the Lions pathway, international playing career and coaching background will all form part of his work with the squad.

The winter programme will provide Trott with his first extended opportunity to shape the England Lions under his permanent leadership and help prepare the next generation of players for the demands of international cricket.
