Zaheer Khan Begins New CSK Chapter

Chennai Super Kings have entered a new coaching era after appointing former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach for IPL 2027.

Zaheer replaces Stephen Fleming, who had been associated with CSK since 2008 and served as the franchise's head coach from 2009. The change brings an end to one of the longest coaching partnerships in IPL history and gives Zaheer the responsibility of guiding Chennai into a new phase.

Suresh Raina Reacts to the Appointment

Former CSK batter Suresh Raina has responded to the franchise's decision to bring Zaheer into the coaching setup. Raina, who spent a major part of his IPL career with Chennai, remains closely associated with the franchise's history and has regularly spoken about the team and its future.

The appointment has generated considerable discussion because Zaheer had previously worked in senior roles with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, but this will be his first head-coaching position in franchise cricket.

Zaheer Replaces Long-Time Coach Stephen Fleming

Fleming's departure represents a significant change for Chennai. During his time at the franchise, he worked alongside MS Dhoni through multiple successful IPL campaigns and helped establish CSK as one of the competition's most consistent teams.

CSK won five IPL titles during Fleming's coaching tenure. His exit followed three consecutive seasons in which Chennai failed to reach the playoffs, making the appointment of a new head coach part of a broader transition.

Zaheer Brings Extensive IPL Experience

Although Zaheer has not previously served as an IPL head coach, he has considerable experience working inside franchise cricket organisations.

After retiring from playing, Zaheer became Mumbai Indians' Director of Cricket Operations and later Head of Global Development. He subsequently worked as a mentor with Lucknow Super Giants.

His previous roles involved player development, cricket operations and working closely with young players, particularly fast bowlers.

A World Cup Winner Takes Charge

Zaheer was one of India's leading fast bowlers during the 2000s and was an important member of the team that won the 2011 ODI World Cup.

He finished that tournament with 21 wickets, sharing the highest wicket tally with Pakistan's Shahid Afridi. Across his IPL career, Zaheer played 100 matches and claimed 102 wickets.

His international experience and understanding of high-level fast bowling are expected to be important parts of his coaching approach at Chennai.

Raina's Long CSK Association

Raina remains one of the most prominent figures in CSK history. He played a central role in the franchise's early success and was widely recognised as one of its key batting figures.

He finished his CSK IPL career with 4,687 runs, while also contributing as a part-time bowler and an influential senior player. His long association with the franchise means his views on developments around Chennai continue to attract attention.

Earlier in the build-up to IPL 2027, former India batter Aakash Chopra had also discussed Raina as a possible candidate for a coaching or mentoring role at CSK because of his strong connection with the franchise.

MS Dhoni Involved in the Coaching Decision

CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan has said that MS Dhoni was involved in the decision-making process that led to Zaheer's appointment.

According to Viswanathan, the cricket management group considered Zaheer's IPL experience and his work with players before selecting him. Dhoni, Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad were part of the management discussions.

Zaheer has also been given the responsibility of deciding his support staff, according to the CSK management. The franchise's existing support structure includes figures such as Mike Hussey, Sridharan Sriram and Eric Simons.

Zaheer's First Major Task Ahead of IPL 2027

The new head coach will now have to work with the franchise on its preparations for the 2027 season. One of the immediate areas of focus will be squad planning and preparations for the IPL auction.

CSK have missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, so Zaheer's first season will begin with considerable attention on squad balance, player development and the team's approach to the new campaign.

The appointment changes the leadership structure at one of the IPL's most established franchises. Zaheer arrives with experience as a player, mentor and cricket administrator, while Ruturaj Gaikwad is set to continue as captain.
