Will Jacks’ All-Round Masterclass Helps England Beat Sri Lanka by 89 Runs

Will Jacks delivered a decisive all-round performance as England opened their three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka with an 89-run victory at Chester-le-Street. After making an unbeaten 46 with the bat, Jacks returned with the ball to claim a career-best 5/22, helping England dismiss Sri Lanka for 176 in 37 overs.

England Post 265 After Choosing to Bat

England won the toss and elected to bat on a slow surface where stroke-making was not always straightforward. The hosts eventually reached 265 before being bowled out in 48.1 overs.

Harry Brook led the scoring for England with a composed 67 from 69 balls. Joe Root contributed 44 from 52 deliveries, while Ben Duckett and Jos Buttler added 32 and 31 respectively.

England appeared capable of reaching a larger total when they were 182 for 3, but Sri Lanka fought back strongly in the middle and late stages of the innings. Debutant leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage impressed on his international debut, taking 3/44, while Asitha Fernando also claimed three wickets for 53 runs.

Jacks Provides Crucial Late Runs

With England losing wickets during the latter stages, Jacks played an important role in ensuring the hosts reached a defendable total. He remained unbeaten on 46 from 47 deliveries and struck four consecutive boundaries during his innings.

His contribution became even more significant once England began bowling. The all-rounder used the conditions effectively and consistently troubled Sri Lanka's middle and lower order.

Sri Lanka Lose Early Wickets

Sri Lanka's chase of 266 began with some resistance, but England kept finding breakthroughs. Pathum Nissanka made 27 before Josh Tongue removed him, while the visitors struggled to build sustained partnerships.

Kusal Mendis offered some resistance with 42 from 60 balls, but Sri Lanka's middle order could not establish the partnerships needed to keep the chase alive. Charith Asalanka was dismissed for 1, while several other batters failed to convert starts into substantial scores.

Jacks Produces Career-Best Bowling Figures

Jacks then took control of the contest. He finished with 5/22 from seven overs, recording his maiden five-wicket haul in ODI cricket.

He first removed Charith Asalanka and later dismissed captain Kusal Mendis, who fell for 42 while attempting to play a sweep. Dunith Wellalage briefly threatened to extend Sri Lanka's resistance with a brisk 45 from 36 balls, but Jacks ended his stay at the crease.

The England spinner then completed his five-wicket haul in spectacular fashion. He took three wickets in the final over, dismissing Wellalage, Asitha Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka as Sri Lanka's innings ended at 176.

England Take 1-0 Series Lead

The 89-run victory gives England a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The result also continued their strong recent white-ball record against Sri Lanka after England had already completed a 3-0 T20I series sweep earlier in the tour.

Jacks was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 46 and five-wicket haul. His bowling figures were also the second-best by an England spinner in men's ODI cricket, behind Vic Marks' 5/20 against New Zealand in 1984.

Next ODI at Headingley

The second ODI will be played at Headingley in Leeds on September 24. Sri Lanka will need a much stronger batting performance to level the series, while England will look to build on their opening victory and move one step closer to another ODI series success.
