The opening ODI between South Africa and Australia will be played at Kingsmead in Durban on September 24. The second match is scheduled for September 27 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, before the series concludes in Potchefstroom on September 30.
Australia will then turn their attention towards the three-match Test series against South Africa, which begins in October.
For Cummins, the immediate focus is therefore likely to remain on balancing his return to ODI cricket with preparation for the red-ball challenge ahead. His expected absence from the Durban opener gives Australia another opportunity to use their pace depth while keeping their Test captain fresh for the demanding weeks to come.
