Hardik Pandya Suffers Tibial Bone Stress, New Zealand Return Now Uncertain
Hardik Pandya has suffered a symptomatic right tibial bone stress response and has been ruled out of India A’s upcoming one-day series against Australia A. There is no fracture or established structural bone damage, but he has been advised two weeks of rest. His availability for India’s New Zealand tour next month is now uncertain.

Hardik Pandya's comeback plans have suffered another setback after the India all-rounder was diagnosed with a symptomatic right tibial bone stress response. The injury has ruled him out of India A's upcoming three-match one-day series against Australia A and has also raised doubts over his availability for India's tour of New Zealand.
Medical information reported by Cricbuzz indicates that there is no fracture or established structural damage to Pandya's right tibia. However, the injury requires rest and rehabilitation, with such bone-stress injuries generally taking around four to six weeks to recover.
Hardik Ruled Out of Australia A Series
Pandya had been included in India's one-day squad for the Australia A series subject to fitness clearance. The three matches are scheduled to take place in Puducherry on October 6, 9 and 11.
His latest injury means he will not be able to use the series as a competitive return. Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the 2026 Indian Premier League, making the setback particularly significant as India continue preparing their white-ball squad.
The BCCI had originally selected Pandya as part of the India A one-day squad while making his participation conditional on medical clearance.
No Fracture Reported
Although the injury involves the shin bone, reports indicate that scans have not shown a fracture. The diagnosis is a symptomatic bone stress response rather than an established stress fracture.
Pandya has been advised two weeks of rest by the medical team at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. His recovery will subsequently determine how quickly he can resume cricket-related activities and progress towards competitive match fitness.
New Zealand Tour Now in Doubt
India are scheduled to play five T20Is against New Zealand from October 22 to November 1, followed by three ODIs from November 4 to 15. Pandya's availability for that tour will depend on his recovery and subsequent fitness assessment.
A return for the T20I leg remains possible if his rehabilitation progresses well, but his participation cannot currently be confirmed. The ODI matches appear to be a more challenging target given the expected recovery timeline.
Pandya Has Been Out Since IPL 2026
Pandya's latest setback extends a lengthy period away from competitive cricket. He played 10 of Mumbai Indians' 14 matches during IPL 2026 but has not appeared in a competitive fixture since the tournament.
His last T20I appearance came in India's 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, while his most recent ODI appearance was in the 2025 Champions Trophy final.
Another Interruption to His Comeback
The tibial bone stress issue is the latest interruption in Pandya's rehabilitation programme. Earlier this year, he had been working at the Centre of Excellence while recovering from a back problem and subsequently suffered a quadriceps strain.
That earlier injury had already prevented him from being considered for India's home T20I series against Afghanistan. His inclusion in the Australia A squad was intended to provide a route back into competitive cricket, but the latest problem has delayed that plan again.
India Still Value Pandya's All-Round Role
India coach Gautam Gambhir has previously highlighted Pandya's importance to the team's white-ball plans because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. His capacity to provide a genuine seam-bowling option while batting in the middle order gives India a particular balance.
For that reason, India are likely to prioritise a complete recovery rather than rushing him back into competitive cricket. Match fitness will also be important because Pandya needs sufficient game time before being considered for major international assignments.
World Cup Preparation in the Background
India's management will also have the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind as they plan Pandya's return. The upcoming New Zealand tour is part of a broader period of white-ball preparation, making his fitness an important consideration for the team.
However, his immediate priority is rehabilitation. With no established fracture reported, the focus will be on allowing the bone stress response to settle before he resumes a full cricket workload.
Return Date Remains Unclear
Pandya's recovery will now be monitored by the medical team before a decision is made on his return to training and competitive cricket. A four-to-six-week recovery period is typical for this type of injury, but the actual timeline can depend on how the player responds to treatment and rehabilitation.
For now, Pandya is ruled out of the Australia A one-day series, while his availability for India's New Zealand tour remains uncertain. The latest setback means India will have to wait longer for the return of one of their key white-ball all-rounders.
