Profile Summary

At 32, you are on top of your game in most circumstances. Not for Derek de Boorder though as he announced himself unavailable for the Dunedin-based Otago for the 2018-19 domestic season. While not retiring from the game completely, de Boorder accepted a short-term offer with ANZ Bank in Wellington, which ruled him out of contention for his state side.

A competent wicket-keeper batsman, only the presence of the likes of Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling, prevented the likelihood of de Boorder turning up for the Black Caps.He did receive a call-up against South Africa for two Twenty20 internationals in 2012, but never played a game. de Boorder though was a valuable entity in the Otago line-up and might have finished his career at 99 first-class appearances.

He effected an Otago record of 344 dismissals behind the stumps and once equaled the world record by taking eight catches in an innings. Another cherished moment in his illustrious career came when he played a pivotal role in Otago Volts clinching the 50-over trophy in January, 2013 - thereby breaking the title drought which had lasted 20 years. Having started his career with Auckland in 2005-06, de Boorder switched to Otago after an opening was caused owning to the exit of regular gloveman, Gareth Hopkins.
