Profile Summary

Anura Tennekoon captained the Sri Lankan unit in the inaugural World Cup held in England in 1975 and followed it up by again leading the side in the 1979 World Cup. He was also known for his technical brilliance as a batsman.

Tennekoon started his ODI career with a duck against the West Indies. But in the 1979 World Cup, he gave a glimpse of his class with a fine fifty against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. Unfortunately, he didn't play when Sri Lanka pulled off an upset by beating India at Old Trafford in that tournament. He was down with a hamstring injury at that time. As Sri Lanka weren't yet a Test nation then, opportunities were far and few between for the highly rated cricketer. Since retirement, Tennekoon has been a CEO of the Sri Lankan board and was also the manager of the Sri Lankan set-up that toured England in 2011.
