Profile Summary

A spin bowling all-rounder, Manzoor wasn't quite an impersonation of Mushtaq Ahmed. Pint-sized Akhtar could be equally effective in the lower middle order as a batsman and as a tweaker, his leg-breaks did turn in favorable conditions. Such was the case at Sharjah on a humid day in Dec 1997, when Manzoor picked up 4 of his 5 ODI wickets against England and also managed his top score in ODIs - 44. But despite his all-round efforts, England sneaked in a win by 8 runs and went on to win the tournament which also featured West Indies and India.

Manzoor played only 7 ODIs as other all-rounders like Shahid Afridi, Azhar Mahmood and Abdur Razzaq were preferred over him. Manzoor's 1st wicket in ODIs was Sachin Tendulkar and his last ODI was a historic clash as well - third final of the Silver Jubilee Independence Cup, which India won off the penultimate ball at Dhaka. Akhtar did tally more than a hundred games at the domestic level but would have been very disappointed with a such a short stay at the international level.
