Profile Summary

Having made his first-class debut at the tender age of 17, life seemed a fairytale for Brian Hastings. But
it took him over 11 years from thereon to make his international debut. A gifted timer of the ball, there
was a soothing touch to Hastings' strokeplay, particularly when he essayed the horizontal bat shots
square of the wicket on either side. There wasn't any doubt about his ability but the consistency wasn't
always of the highest order. Many felt that his statistics were lukewarm for a batsman of his ability. Once
Hastings made his New Zealand debut, he became a vital cog of the middle order during the 1970s,
slotting in at 4. While there were critics who pointed at his lack of big scores, he was a consistent
contributor nevertheless. One of his best achievements was a world record last-wicket stand with
Richard Collinge against a strong Pakistan attack. In the domestic circuit, Hastings was a veteran who
evoked immense respect due to his durability and flair. After his playing days, he became a famed ICC
match referee.
