Profile Summary
Born in Visakhapatnam, Venugopal Rao made his first-class debut at a very tender age of 16, with his state side Andhra during the 1998-99 season. He impressed everyone with his, technically sound, batting and cemented a place in the side. As his career progressed, he improved his limited-overs batting.
He made his ODI debut in 2005 against Sri Lanka and was given a good run that year. He also toured to the UAE to play against Pakistan the next year but was never preferred for national duty.
Having played for Andhra for quite a few years, Venugopal Rao shifted bases to Gujarat in 2012. Though he had a poor first season for the side, he batted very well in the 2013-14 season and was one of the top run-getters for the side.
He was with the Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010, before moving to Delhi Daredevils in 2011. Having been released by DD after the 2013 season, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the 2014 auctions, for whom he played a few matches in IPL-7.
