Profile Summary
An off spinner who used his tall frame to extract disconcerting bounce, Peter Taylor started his international career with a bang, registering a 6-fer on debut in an Ashes Test. Bowling with an unorthodox action, he was more suited for ODI cricket and this proven true in the long run as he struggled in Tests with the long spells. In fact, his Test debut in itself was an event as the selection came as a shocker to all those associated with Australian cricket. Many felt that it was a mistake from the selectors' side, probably thinking Peter to be the more famous Taylor, Mark. Jokes aside, he did prove his worth as an ODI bowler and was a more than competitive batsman who could dig in there. He played a vital part in Australia's ODI fortunes and was one of New South Wales' reputed figures. Ultimately, he got replaced by Shane Warne. Peter was also a fine fielder during his cricketing days and also had the ability to turn the ball appreciably on most surfaces. After his playing days, he spent a long time as national selector in the 90s.
