Profile Summary
A canny off-spinner and a handy batsman lower down the order, Eddie Hemmings was a late bloomer. He was 33 when he was handed his debut but hung on to play 16 Tests and 33 ODIs for England. He began cricket as a seam bowler but his move to spin opened up a Test call up.
He snapped up 43 Test wickets with his best figures of 6-58 coming against New Zealand at Brimingham in 1990. Hemmings also scored 2 Test fifties, which stand testimony to his guts with the bat. He tailed off soon after but was drafed back into the team with John Embury being slapped with a three-year ban for a rebel tour to South Africa. Hemmings' Test career came to a close at the age of 42 but he continued to play first-class cricket until retirement in 1995.
