Profile Summary

An aggressive lower-middle order batsman, a capable fast bowler and an athletic fielder, Chris Lewis had everything it took to be a fine all-rounder, but ended his playing days as an unfulfilled talent. He made his debut in 1990, and apart from a few good outings in the 1992 World Cup, never delivered to his full potential and was always seen as a waste of talent. His bad-boy image didn't help his cause either.

He played 32 Tests for England between 1990 and 1996, and took 93 wickets. He even scored a Test century - in a losing cause at Madras (now Chennai) in 1992-93. However, Lewis struggled to maintain a decent image among his peers and was ostracized further in 1999, when he claimed that three England cricketers were involved in match fixing (but never proved those allegations). That led to him being jeered by crowds and snubbed by peers, and a loss of form in the same period saw him fade away at just 32.

Lewis attempted to return to the Surrey team in 2008 at the age of 40, but his comeback was cut short due to an injury. Lewis was arrested at Gatwick airport on charges of smuggling cocaine in 2008, and was later sentenced to 13 years in prison for the offence.
