Profile Summary

Crookes hailed from Mariannhill, Natal and started his career with Natal, Gauteng and Easterns. He was a right-arm off-spinner and a handy lower order batsman. When South Africa were struggling to find a spinner in the 1990's, they found Crookes as an answer to their worries. His first taste of international cricket came against Pakistan in 1994-95, he didn't pick up a wicket in his first five ODI games but eventually opened his account against Kenya.

Crookes was a live-wire in the field and was a decent batsman, these attributes made him a regular member in the ODI team. However, he failed to make it to the Test side because he never used to toss the ball or turn it for that matter. He was also involved in the match-fixing scandal in 2000. It came to light that Cronje had told the bookies that Crooke would open the bowling in the 5th ODI at Nagpur, which he did and conceded 69 runs in 10 overs. He later admitted to the King Commission that he was shocked with the decision of him opening the bowling.

Crookes retired from all forms of cricket in 2005-06.
