Tom Banton’s Maiden ODI Hundred Powers England to Huge Series-Sealing Win

England completed a dominant 2-1 ODI series victory over Sri Lanka with a massive 223-run win in the third and final match at The Oval. Tom Banton produced the standout performance of the contest, scoring his maiden ODI century as England posted an imposing 355 for 7 before bowling Sri Lanka out for just 132.

The victory gave England the series after Sri Lanka had levelled the contest with a 16-run win in the second ODI at Headingley. England's performance in the decider was comprehensive, with their batting setting up the match before the bowlers completed the job.

Banton Announces Himself With Maiden ODI Century

Banton played the defining innings of the match, producing an aggressive 126 from 105 deliveries. His century was the first of his ODI career and came during an innings in which he struck 16 fours and five sixes.

The England opener combined controlled strokeplay with attacking shots throughout his innings. He eventually departed for 126 when Sachindu Colombage caught him at long-on, but by then Banton had already provided England with the platform for a huge total.

Banton's century also capped an impressive ODI series. He finished the three-match contest with 209 runs at an average of 69.66, with his 126 remaining the highest score of the series.

Brook and Cox Add More Pressure

England's top order continued the momentum after Banton's departure. Harry Brook produced another important contribution, scoring 77 to strengthen the hosts' position in the middle overs.

Jordan Cox then accelerated the innings with an excellent 76, giving England another major partnership and ensuring Sri Lanka faced an increasingly difficult target.

The combined efforts of Banton, Brook and Cox helped England finish with 355 for 7 from their 50 overs. The total gave the bowlers a substantial cushion heading into Sri Lanka's chase.

Sri Lanka Lose Nissanka Early

Sri Lanka's chase got off to the worst possible start when Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for just one. Sonny Baker claimed the wicket, giving the young England bowler his maiden ODI breakthrough.

Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis attempted to rebuild the innings, but England continued to find wickets at regular intervals. Gus Atkinson removed Kamindu before Kusal briefly provided resistance with an aggressive 35 from 26 balls.

England's Bowlers Take Complete Control

Once Kusal departed, Sri Lanka's chase rapidly deteriorated. Dunith Wellalage was dismissed by Liam Dawson while attempting to attack the spinner, leaving the visitors six wickets down for only 82 runs.

Janith Liyanage tried to counterattack with a four and a six, but he could not sustain the resistance. Sachindu Colombage was stumped off Dawson, while England's pace attack continued to close out the innings.

Gus Atkinson finished with 2 for 26, while Dawson was particularly effective in the middle overs and ended with 3 for 26.

Sri Lanka Bowled Out for 132

Sri Lanka eventually collapsed completely and were dismissed for 132 in just 29.1 overs. Malinga struck two boundaries late in the innings but was eventually dismissed by Will Jacks, with Joe Root taking an excellent catch at leg slip.

The 223-run margin was England's reward for maintaining pressure throughout the chase. Sri Lanka never came close to threatening the 356-run target after losing wickets regularly during the first half of their innings.

Jacks Completes an Excellent Series

Will Jacks, who had produced a match-winning all-round display in the first ODI, again contributed with the ball in the decider. His wicket of Malinga brought the innings to an end.

Jacks finished the three-match ODI series with 147 runs and nine wickets, earning the Player of the Series award for his all-round contribution.

England Bounce Back From Headingley Defeat

The series had briefly swung Sri Lanka's way after their 16-run victory in the second ODI. Kusal Mendis had scored a superb 121 in that match, helping Sri Lanka post 321 for 6 before England finished on 305 for 9.

England responded emphatically at The Oval. Their 355-run total was followed by a disciplined bowling performance that removed any possibility of another close finish.

England Win the ODI Series 2-1

The result means England finish the three-match ODI series with a 2-1 victory. They had opened the contest with an 89-run win at Chester-le-Street before Sri Lanka fought back at Headingley.

The final match, however, belonged entirely to England. Banton's maiden ODI century provided the foundation, Brook and Cox added further momentum, and the bowlers completed a comprehensive victory by dismissing Sri Lanka for 132.

For Banton, the match represented a major milestone in his international career. His 126 was not only his first ODI century but also the highest individual score of the series.
