Cricket World Cup 2027 Schedule to Be Unveiled in Cape Town on October 1

The countdown to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 is set to enter a major phase on October 1, when the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) unveil the tournament schedule in Cape Town.

The announcement will come almost a year before the competition and is expected to provide fans with the complete fixture structure, match venues and the pathway through the tournament. The event will also open registrations for the World Cup ticket ballot.

World Cup Schedule Announcement in Cape Town

Cape Town has been selected as the venue for the schedule launch, which will mark an important milestone in preparations for the 2027 World Cup. The tournament will return to Africa after 24 years and will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The tournament is scheduled for October and November 2027, with the current tournament listing showing October 4 as the opening date and November 21 as the final date. The official schedule announcement will provide confirmation of the match-by-match calendar and venues.

14 Teams to Compete in the Expanded Tournament

The 2027 World Cup will feature 14 teams, making it a larger competition than the 10-team edition held in 2023. Ten places are being decided through direct qualification, while the remaining four positions will be determined through a qualifying tournament.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have secured places as two of the host nations. Namibia, despite being the third host country, does not have an automatic place and must qualify through the designated pathway.

Qualification Picture Nears Its Deadline

The direct qualification cut-off is September 30, one day before the schedule announcement. The eight highest-ranked eligible teams in the ICC ODI rankings, alongside the two automatically qualified hosts, will make up the 10 direct qualifiers.

India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are currently positioned to secure places through the ranking route. South Africa's hosting position also affects the qualification calculation because the Proteas already have a guaranteed berth.

The remaining four World Cup places will be decided through the qualification tournament scheduled for early 2027. Teams entering that competition will compete for the final four spots in the 14-team World Cup.

New Three-Stage Competition Format

The 2027 World Cup will use a new three-stage format before the semi-finals and final. The tournament will begin with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked teams among the 14 qualifiers.

Those three teams will play a round-robin competition, with the leading side progressing to the next stage. The second round will then feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six.

After the second stage, seven teams will move into the Super 7 phase. The three highest-ranked teams from each group will qualify, along with the best fourth-placed team across the two groups.

Super 7 Stage Leads Into Knockouts

The Super 7 phase will consist of 21 round-robin matches. The four teams finishing highest in the standings will advance to the semi-finals.

The semi-final structure will see the team finishing first in the Super 7 standings face the fourth-placed team, while the second-placed side will meet the third-placed side. The two semi-final winners will then meet in the World Cup final.

12 Venues Across Three Countries

The tournament will be staged across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. South Africa will provide eight venues, while Zimbabwe will host matches at three locations and Namibia will have Windhoek as its host venue.

The South African venues include Johannesburg, Centurion, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Paarl and East London. Zimbabwe's venues are Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, while Windhoek represents Namibia.

Ticket Registration to Open

Fans will also get their first opportunity to register for the World Cup ticket ballot on October 1. The process will allow supporters to express their interest in attending matches, although tickets will not immediately go on general sale.
