Mohit Sharma Set to Join CSK as Bowling Coach Ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings are set to bring former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma back to the franchise, this time as their bowling coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season.

The 38-year-old is expected to take over the bowling coach position from Eric Simons and become the first major addition to the support staff being assembled by newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan.

Zaheer Khan Identifies Mohit for the Role

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Mohit's name was recommended by Zaheer Khan, who has been given responsibility for putting together the franchise's coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Mohit is expected to formally complete his agreement with CSK before the appointment is officially announced. His return gives the franchise a familiar figure who already has extensive experience inside the CSK setup.

Mohit's Previous CSK Connection

Mohit previously represented Chennai Super Kings across four IPL seasons and made 48 appearances for the franchise. He also played 10 matches for CSK across two editions of the now-defunct Champions League T20.

His most productive IPL season came in 2014, when he took 23 wickets for CSK and finished as the tournament's leading wicket-taker. He subsequently represented Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals during different stages of his career.

Retirement Came in December 2025

Mohit remained active in the IPL until the 2025 season, when he last played for Delhi Capitals. He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2025.

Across his IPL career, Mohit played 120 matches and claimed 134 wickets. He also represented India in 26 ODIs and eight T20Is, taking 31 and six wickets respectively.

Replacing Eric Simons

Mohit will replace Eric Simons, who was part of Stephen Fleming's coaching setup at CSK. Simons had served as the franchise's bowling coach during Fleming's long tenure as head coach.

The change is part of a wider restructuring at CSK following the end of Fleming's association with the franchise and the appointment of Zaheer as head coach for IPL 2027.

More Coaching Appointments Expected

CSK have not yet finalised their complete support staff for the new season. The identity of the batting coach remains undecided, with several names reportedly being considered.

Zaheer is also expected to have a major role in selecting the remaining members of the coaching and support team. The franchise is likely to announce further appointments in the coming weeks.

A New Chapter for Mohit

The bowling coach position will represent a new phase in Mohit's cricket career. Having spent more than a decade playing professional cricket, including several seasons at CSK, he will now move from working as a player to developing and guiding bowlers from the coaching box.

His experience of playing in different IPL environments, handling powerplay and death-over situations and working alongside some of the league's leading players will form an important part of his new role.

CSK Begin IPL 2027 Rebuild

CSK last won the IPL title in 2023 but missed the playoffs in each of the following three seasons. The franchise subsequently parted ways with Fleming and appointed Zaheer as the new head coach.

Mohit's expected appointment is therefore the first major step in building Zaheer's support team. With further coaching decisions still to come, CSK's preparations for IPL 2027 are now moving into a new phase.
