Sam Harper Rescues Australia A With Superb Unbeaten Century in Puducherry

Sam Harper produced a composed and determined century to lead Australia A's fightback on the opening day of the second unofficial Test against India A in Puducherry.

After Australia A slipped to 16/3 and later found themselves struggling at 104/5, Harper took responsibility for rebuilding the innings. The Victoria wicketkeeper-batter remained unbeaten on 101 from 153 deliveries, helping Australia A reach 282/7 by the close of play.

Australia A Collapse Early

Australia A won the toss and elected to bat, but their decision initially appeared to backfire as India A's bowlers made early inroads.

Josh Philippe, moved up the batting order, was dismissed for five before Sam Konstas fell for two. Australia A captain Peter Handscomb then departed for a duck, leaving the visitors in serious trouble at 16/3.

Jason Sangha and Nathan McSweeney provided some stability with an 81-run fourth-wicket partnership. Sangha made 46 before Shams Mulani removed him, and McSweeney followed for 34 soon afterwards.

Harper Arrives During Trouble

Harper came to the crease with Australia A at 104/5 and quickly recognised that the priority was to rebuild rather than chase quick runs.

He combined patience with controlled aggression, particularly against the spin. Harper used his feet effectively and looked to put pressure back on India's bowlers whenever scoring opportunities appeared.

Important Partnership With Liam Scott

Harper found an important partner in Liam Scott, and the pair added 84 runs for the sixth wicket. Scott contributed 34 from 82 balls while Harper continued to anchor the innings.

The partnership shifted momentum back towards Australia A and gave the visitors a platform from which to challenge India's bowling attack.

Nachiket Bhute eventually ended the partnership by dismissing Scott, but Harper remained firmly in control of his innings.

Todd Murphy Helps Harper Complete the Rescue

Todd Murphy joined Harper after Scott's dismissal and provided valuable support. The pair added another 89 runs for the seventh wicket, taking Australia A from a difficult position to a respectable total.

Murphy played a patient innings of 33 from 91 deliveries, allowing Harper to take greater control as the day progressed.

Sixth First-Class Century

Harper reached his century from 146 balls, registering his sixth first-class hundred. He eventually finished the day on 101 not out from 153 balls, with seven fours and three sixes.

It was also Harper's first innings of the tour and his first first-class appearance outside Australia, making the performance particularly significant in unfamiliar conditions.

India A's Bowlers Keep Pressure On

Nachiket Bhute and Shams Mulani were India's leading wicket-takers. Both finished the day with three wickets.

Bhute claimed 3/35, while Mulani took 3/77 after bowling 28 overs. Mulani had already made a significant impact during the opening unofficial Test and again played a central role in India's attack.

However, India's bowling was also affected by a high number of no-balls. The hosts sent down 21 no-balls during the day, giving Australia A additional deliveries and opportunities to score.

Australia A Reach 282/7

By stumps, Australia A had reached 282/7 from 87 overs. Harper remained unbeaten, with Jhye Richardson alongside him at the end of the day's play.

The total represented a major recovery from the visitors' early collapse and left Australia A with an opportunity to push towards a stronger first-innings score on the second morning.

Harper Makes Timely Statement

Harper's performance also comes at an important stage for Australian cricket. With wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis dealing with a finger injury, Harper's ability to keep wicket and bat across different positions gives him an additional skill set.

The 29-year-old has also enjoyed a strong recent domestic season for Victoria, where he has developed into an aggressive top-order batter. His unbeaten century in Puducherry provides another significant performance as he continues to build his first-class credentials.

India A won the opening unofficial Test by 162 runs, meaning Australia A entered the second match looking to respond strongly. Harper's century has given the visitors a much stronger position after the first day's play.
