Justin Greaves Ruled Out of Second ODI After Maiden ODI Century

West Indies will be without Justin Greaves for the second ODI against India after the all-rounder was ruled out with a calf injury sustained during the opening match of the series in Thiruvananthapuram.

Greaves produced the standout performance of his ODI career in the first match, scoring his maiden century in the format. However, the injury forced him to leave the field after his innings and he will now miss the second game in Guwahati.

Greaves Injured During His Century

Greaves scored 101 from 108 deliveries in the opening ODI, helping West Indies post a competitive 295/7 after being sent in to bat.

The 32-year-old showed signs of discomfort while batting and required attention during his innings. Despite the problem, he continued to the three-figure mark before being dismissed by India's Kuldeep Yadav.

Greaves subsequently did not take the field when India began their chase, with the calf problem preventing him from contributing during the second innings.

Maiden ODI Century Comes at a Cost

The century was an important milestone for Greaves, who had previously registered two ODI half-centuries but had not reached three figures in the format.

His 101 came from 108 balls and included 12 fours. He provided West Indies with a strong start alongside John Campbell, with the opening pair putting together a 135-run partnership.

Greaves' innings gave West Indies a strong platform, although India eventually chased down the target comfortably.

India Take 1-0 Series Lead

West Indies finished on 295/7 in the first ODI, with Greaves, Campbell and Amir Jangoo making significant contributions with the bat.

India responded with 300/2 in 41.4 overs. Shubman Gill scored 110, while Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 139 as India secured an eight-wicket victory with 50 balls remaining.

The result gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and left West Indies needing a victory in Guwahati to keep the series alive.

West Indies Face Opening Combination Change

Greaves' absence leaves West Indies with a decision to make at the top of the batting order. Jewel Andrew is among the options available to replace him and could be considered for a promotion alongside John Campbell.

Sherfane Rutherford, who missed the first ODI for personal reasons, is also available again and could return to the middle order.

Greaves' Recent ODI Form

The injury comes at a time when Greaves has been producing consistent performances in ODI cricket. Since the beginning of 2025, he has scored 528 runs in 19 ODI innings and has also contributed seven wickets with his medium pace.

His first ODI century against India further strengthened his importance to the West Indies limited-overs setup, making his absence an additional challenge for the visitors.

Fitness for Third ODI Also a Question

Greaves' availability for the third ODI is also uncertain. The final match of the three-game series is scheduled for October 3 in Chandigarh, giving the West Indies team management another fitness decision to make after the Guwahati fixture.

Greaves is not part of the West Indies squad for the five-match T20I series against India, which begins on October 6.

Second ODI in Guwahati

The second ODI will be played at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on September 30. India can seal the series with another victory, while West Indies will be looking to bounce back after their opening defeat.

Without the player who scored their century in the first match, West Indies will need another strong contribution from their top order as they attempt to keep the ODI series alive.
