Shubman Gill’s Double Century Powers India to Record-Breaking Chase Against West Indies
Shubman Gill smashed an unbeaten 223 to lead India to their highest successful ODI chase as they hunted down West Indies’ 405/7 in Guwahati. Rohit Sharma added 101, with India reaching 406/2 in 43.3 overs to win by eight wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Shubman Gill produced one of the most remarkable ODI innings of his career as India chased down 406 against West Indies in Guwahati, securing an eight-wicket victory and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Gill remained unbeaten on 223 from just 133 balls, completing the fastest double century in ODI history. His extraordinary innings, combined with Rohit Sharma's 101, powered India to 406/2 in only 43.3 overs.
Gill Produces a Record-Breaking Double Century
Gill's 223 not out was his second ODI double century, following his 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023. He became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double hundreds.
The India captain reached his century from 62 balls before accelerating further. His double century came from only 117 deliveries, beating the previous ODI record of 126 balls set by Ishan Kishan against Bangladesh.
Gill finished with 26 fours and eight sixes, producing an innings that combined controlled strokeplay with powerful hitting throughout the chase.
First Captain With Test and ODI Double Hundreds
The innings also created another major milestone for Gill. He became the first captain in men's international cricket to score a double century in both Test and ODI cricket.
Gill had previously scored 269 against England in Birmingham in 2025. His unbeaten 223 in Guwahati therefore added another major achievement to his growing international record.
Rohit Sharma Sets the Platform
Rohit Sharma provided the perfect start to the chase, reaching his century from 72 balls. He eventually made 101 from 75 deliveries, striking 11 fours and two sixes.
Gill and Rohit produced a massive 255-run opening partnership from 158 balls. It became India's highest opening partnership on home soil and gave the hosts an ideal platform for the demanding chase.
Rohit also became the third Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach 12,000 ODI runs during the innings.
India Cross 300 at Record Speed
India's scoring rate remained relentless throughout the chase. The team reached 200 in just 21.1 overs and crossed 300 in 29.1 overs, the fastest any team had reached the 300-run mark in an ODI.
Virat Kohli briefly joined Gill after Rohit's dismissal and contributed 29 from 19 balls. Ruturaj Gaikwad then provided support with an unbeaten 31 from 37 balls as Gill completed the chase.
West Indies Post a Huge 405
Earlier, West Indies had produced a spectacular batting performance of their own after being asked to bat first. The visitors scored 405/7, their first 400-plus total in ODI cricket.
John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries. Campbell smashed 101 from 65 balls, Hope made 104 from 94 and Jangoo produced 114 from 77 deliveries.
It was only the sixth time in ODI history that three batters from the same team had scored centuries in one innings.
Hope and Jangoo Add 182 Runs
After Campbell's century ended, Hope and Jangoo launched a powerful assault on India's bowling attack. The pair added 182 runs from 131 deliveries for the third wicket.
Hope provided the stability while Jangoo attacked from the other end, accelerating rapidly after reaching his half-century. Their partnership took West Indies beyond 300 and placed India under significant pressure before the final overs.
India's Bowlers Recover at the End
Despite the difficult conditions for bowling, India managed to take regular wickets during the latter stages. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja claimed two wickets each, while Gurnoor Brar also finished with two.
Kuldeep also reached 200 ODI wickets when he dismissed Keemo Paul, becoming the fastest Indian spinner to reach the landmark. Only Mohammed Shami has reached 200 wickets for India in fewer matches.
West Indies scored 76 runs from the final 10 overs to finish on 405/7, leaving India with a required run rate above eight an over.
India Complete the Second-Highest Successful ODI Chase
India's 406-run chase became the second-highest successful chase in ODI history. South Africa remain at the top after chasing 438 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
India reached the target with 39 balls remaining, demonstrating the scale of their batting performance on a flat Guwahati surface.
Five Centuries in One ODI
The match produced five individual centuries, with three from West Indies and two from India. It was the first ODI in which five batters scored hundreds in the same match.
The combined total of 811 runs also made it one of the highest-scoring ODI matches ever played, underlining the extraordinary batting conditions in Guwahati.
India Seal the Series
The victory gives India a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, making the final match in Chandigarh a dead rubber in terms of the series result.
India's captain has already suggested that the team could use the final ODI to give opportunities to players who have not featured in the series. West Indies, meanwhile, will look to finish the tour with a consolation victory after producing two huge batting totals without winning either match.
