Shubman Gill and India Rewrite the Record Books in Extraordinary Guwahati Chase
India produced a remarkable batting display in Guwahati, chasing West Indies' 405/7 with 39 balls to spare. Shubman Gill's unbeaten 223 headlined the record-filled night, while Rohit Sharma scored 101. The match featured 811 runs, five centuries and India's second-highest successful ODI chase.

The second ODI between India and West Indies in Guwahati turned into an extraordinary run-scoring contest as both teams combined for 811 runs, five centuries and a series of major ODI records.
West Indies posted 405/7 after centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. India then produced an extraordinary response, reaching 406/2 in only 43.3 overs to win by eight wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
India Complete a Record Chase
India's target of 406 became the second-highest successfully chased total in men's ODI cricket. Only South Africa's successful chase of 435 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006 remains higher.
India's chase was completed with 39 balls still remaining, underlining the scale of their batting performance. The victory also became India's highest successful ODI chase.
Gill Produces a Historic 223
Shubman Gill was at the centre of the remarkable chase, remaining unbeaten on 223 from 133 deliveries. His innings contained 26 fours and eight sixes and became the third-highest individual score in men's ODI cricket.
Only Rohit Sharma's 264 against Sri Lanka and Martin Guptill's unbeaten 237 against West Indies are higher. Gill's 223* is also the highest individual score made during a successful ODI chase.
Fastest ODI Double Century
Gill reached his double century from just 117 balls, setting a new record for the fastest 200 in men's ODI cricket. He surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous mark of 126 balls against Bangladesh.
Gill also became only the second batter after Glenn Maxwell to score an ODI double century while chasing. Maxwell had made an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup.
Gill Makes Captaincy History
The Guwahati innings added another unique achievement to Gill's growing international record. He became the first captain in men's international cricket to score double centuries in both Test and ODI cricket.
Gill had previously scored 269 against England in Birmingham in 2025. His unbeaten 223 therefore gave him a double century in two different international formats while leading India.
Rohit and Gill Rewrite India's Opening Record
Rohit Sharma provided the perfect platform for Gill, scoring 101 from 75 balls. The pair added 255 runs from 158 deliveries before Rohit was dismissed by Jayden Seales.
The partnership became India's highest opening stand in a successful ODI chase and their second-highest opening partnership overall. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly's 258 against Kenya in 2001 remains higher for India.
Rohit's century was his 35th in ODI cricket and also took him to 12,000 runs in the format. He reached the milestone in 282 innings, the second-fastest after Virat Kohli.
Five Centuries in One ODI
The match produced an unusual batting record as five players reached three figures. Gill and Rohit scored centuries for India, while Campbell, Hope and Jangoo did so for West Indies.
It was the first time that five individual centuries had been scored in the same men's ODI. Three centuries in a single ODI innings by one team had previously occurred on five occasions, but West Indies became the first team to score three hundreds in such a match and still finish on the losing side.
West Indies Post Their Highest ODI Total
West Indies' 405/7 was itself a historic achievement. It became their highest total in men's ODI cricket, surpassing their previous best of 389 against England in St George's in 2019.
John Campbell struck 101 from 65 balls, Shai Hope made 104 from 94 and Amir Jangoo smashed 114 from only 77 deliveries.
Hope and Jangoo then added 182 runs for the third wicket, giving West Indies the platform to cross 400 for the first time in their ODI history.
Another 800-Plus Run ODI
The combined score of 811 runs made Guwahati only the fourth ODI to produce more than 800 aggregate runs. The record remains the 872 runs scored during South Africa's famous run-fest against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
The extraordinary batting conditions, relatively small boundaries and high-quality strokeplay allowed both sides to maintain scoring rates rarely seen in 50-over cricket.
Kuldeep Reaches 200 ODI Wickets
India's bowlers faced a difficult evening after West Indies' huge total, but Kuldeep Yadav still reached a significant career milestone.
By dismissing Keemo Paul, Kuldeep became the first left-arm wrist-spinner to claim 200 ODI wickets. He reached the landmark in his 123rd ODI, making him India's second-fastest bowler to 200 wickets after Mohammed Shami.
West Indies' Huge Total Goes Unrewarded
Despite their record-breaking batting effort, West Indies could not defend 405. India's opening pair immediately put the visitors under pressure before Gill continued the assault after Rohit's dismissal.
Virat Kohli contributed 29 from 19 balls before being dismissed, while Ruturaj Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 31 as India completed the chase.
India Seal the ODI Series
The eight-wicket victory gives India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The final ODI will now be played with the series already decided, giving both teams an opportunity to experiment with their combinations.
However, the Guwahati match will remain one of the most statistically remarkable ODIs in recent history, with Gill's double century, India's record chase and an extraordinary collection of batting milestones dominating the night.
