Carey and Marsh Power Australia to Rain-Hit Consolation Victory Over South Africa
Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh struck half-centuries as Australia defeated South Africa by 45 runs via the DLS method in a rain-affected third ODI at Potchefstroom. Australia posted 322/9 before South Africa reached 145/4 in 28 overs. The hosts still won the series 2-1 after taking the opening two matches.

Australia ended their ODI tour of South Africa on a positive note after securing a 45-run DLS victory in a rain-affected third and final match at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.
Alex Carey led Australia's batting effort with 74 from 88 balls, while captain Mitchell Marsh added another aggressive half-century. Australia finished on 322/9 before persistent rain ended South Africa's chase at 145/4 after 28 overs.
Carey Leads Australia's Batting Recovery
After being asked to bat first, Australia made a fast start through Marsh and Travis Head. Marsh continued his excellent individual series, reaching his third consecutive fifty from only 33 balls.
Head made 24 before being bowled by Corbin Bosch, while Marsh was dismissed for 56 after making another rapid contribution at the top of the order.
With Australia's scoring rate slowing during the middle overs, Carey took responsibility for rebuilding the innings. He eventually produced one of his most important knocks of the series, scoring 74 from 88 deliveries.
Peake Provides Valuable Support
Ollie Peake continued his promising start to international cricket with a composed 48. He and Carey added 73 runs for the fifth wicket, stabilising Australia's innings after the early momentum had disappeared.
Peake was two runs short of his maiden ODI half-century when Corbin Bosch produced an outstanding catch at point to dismiss him.
Carey then combined with Matt Renshaw for another useful partnership. The pair added 66 from 62 balls before Renshaw was dismissed by Gerald Coetzee.
Australia Finish on 322/9
Australia accelerated again during the final stages, scoring 72 runs from the last 60 deliveries. Carey was eventually dismissed after making 74, but the lower order ensured the visitors reached a strong 322/9 from their 50 overs.
Corbin Bosch was South Africa's most successful bowler, finishing with 4/60. Gerald Coetzee claimed two wickets, while the hosts used several different bowling options during their attempt to contain Australia's middle order.
South Africa Lose Early Wickets
South Africa's chase got off to a difficult start. Quinton de Kock was dismissed for a duck in the opening over after edging Xavier Bartlett to deep backward square leg.
Bartlett struck again in his next spell, trapping stand-in captain Aiden Markram lbw for 14. South Africa were consequently reduced to 30/2 before the recovery began.
Rickelton Leads the Response
Ryan Rickelton provided the main resistance during the chase. He remained unbeaten on 71 from 81 balls and kept South Africa within reach of the required rate for much of the innings.
Rickelton and Matthew Breetzke added 72 for the third wicket before Adam Zampa changed the momentum. Zampa dismissed Breetzke for 25 and then removed Tristan Stubbs for 14.
South Africa reached 145/4 after 28 overs, with Rickelton still at the crease and Corbin Bosch unbeaten on 13.
Rain Ends South Africa's Chase
Rain then returned to Potchefstroom and forced the players from the field. With conditions deteriorating and no further play possible, the match was eventually abandoned.
Under the DLS method, South Africa were 45 runs short of the required score at the point play was stopped, handing Australia the victory.
South Africa Finish Series Winners
The result prevented South Africa from completing a 3-0 sweep, but the hosts still won the three-match series 2-1 after victories in Durban and Johannesburg.
South Africa won the opening ODI by 67 runs before claiming the second match by 32 runs. Their performances across the first two games had already secured the series before the Potchefstroom finale.
Positive Signs for Australia
Australia's victory provided several encouraging performances ahead of their upcoming Test series. Carey returned to form with the bat, while Adam Zampa produced an effective spell of 2/34 after struggling for impact in the first two ODIs.
Xavier Bartlett also impressed with the new ball, finishing with 2/25 from five overs. Pat Cummins returned to ODI cricket and bowled five economical overs for 17 runs as part of his preparation for the Test series.
Injuries Add Concern for Australia
The victory was not entirely positive for Australia, however. Cameron Green and Matt Renshaw both suffered injury concerns during the match.
Green was struck by a high delivery from Bosch before later appearing to suffer a muscle problem, while Renshaw also experienced discomfort. Their fitness will be monitored as Australia prepare for the three-Test series.
Focus Turns to Test Cricket
The ODI series is now complete, with South Africa taking the overall honours 2-1. Attention immediately shifts towards the Test series, which begins in Durban on October 9.
Australia will take confidence from the final ODI victory, while South Africa will look to carry the momentum from their successful limited-overs campaign into the longer format.
