Tharindu Ratnayake's Explosive Knock and Sri Lanka's Bowlers Secure Asian Games Bronze
Sri Lanka claimed the men's cricket bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games after defeating Bangladesh by 63 runs. Tharindu Ratnayake rescued Sri Lanka from 54/5 with a blistering 65 off 32 balls before returning to take two wickets. Sri Lanka posted 165/9 and then bowled Bangladesh out for 102, with four Sri Lankan bowlers taking two wickets each.

Sri Lanka finished their Asian Games 2026 men's cricket campaign with a bronze medal after producing a strong all-round performance to defeat Bangladesh by 63 runs in the third-place playoff.
The match appeared to be slipping away from Sri Lanka early when their batting order collapsed to 54/5. However, Tharindu Ratnayake changed the momentum with an outstanding counter-attacking innings before the Sri Lankan bowlers completed the job by dismissing Bangladesh for 102.
Sri Lanka in Trouble Early
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Sri Lanka endured a difficult start on a surface that offered assistance to the bowlers. Bangladesh's attack quickly removed four of Sri Lanka's top batters, leaving the team at 21/4 during the Powerplay.
Sahan Arachchige and Ashen Bandara attempted to rebuild the innings, but Rishad Hossain removed Bandara to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 54/5 in the 11th over.
Ratnayake Changes the Game
With Sri Lanka in serious trouble, Ratnayake launched a remarkable counterattack. Batting at No. 7, he joined captain Arachchige and turned the match around with a spectacular sixth-wicket partnership.
The pair added 93 runs from only 44 balls. Ratnayake contributed 65 from 32 deliveries, striking seven fours and five sixes at a strike rate above 200.
The partnership included a 25-run over against Mustafizur Rahman and a 21-run over against Rishad Hossain. Sri Lanka collected 61 runs from the final five overs to finish on 165/9 after 20 overs.
Arachchige Provides Crucial Support
While Ratnayake supplied the acceleration, Arachchige provided the stability Sri Lanka desperately needed. The captain remained composed during the recovery and finished with 33 from 37 balls.
Their contrasting approaches proved effective. Arachchige absorbed the pressure while Ratnayake attacked the bowling, allowing Sri Lanka to recover from a position that had threatened to produce a modest total.
Bangladesh's Chase Collapses
Bangladesh's reply began disastrously. Saif Hasan, Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das all fell without scoring, leaving Bangladesh at 4/3 early in the innings.
Ratnayake then struck again, dismissing Towhid Hridoy as Bangladesh slipped to 18/4. The early wickets placed enormous pressure on the Bangladesh batting order.
Parvez Hossain Emon and Yasir Ali tried to rebuild the innings, but Sri Lanka continued to take wickets at regular intervals. Vijayakanth Viyaskanth eventually broke the partnership, triggering another collapse.
Sri Lankan Bowlers Finish the Job
Bangladesh moved from 50/5 to 72/8 in just 18 deliveries as the Sri Lankan bowling attack took complete control.
Ratnayake finished with 2/18, while Nuwan Thushara also claimed 2/18. Vijayakanth Viyaskanth took 2/26 and Wanuja Sahan returned figures of 2/17.
The balanced bowling effort meant Bangladesh never came close to challenging the target. They were eventually dismissed for 102 in 17.3 overs, giving Sri Lanka a convincing 63-run victory.
Ratnayake Makes an Impact With Bat and Ball
Ratnayake was the standout performer of the bronze-medal match. His 65 rescued Sri Lanka's innings, while his two wickets helped dismantle Bangladesh's chase.
His performance was particularly important because Sri Lanka had entered the playoff after suffering a heavy defeat against India in the semifinal. The all-rounder's contribution helped the team respond strongly and finish the tournament with a medal.
Sri Lanka Finish on the Podium
The bronze medal gives Sri Lanka a positive conclusion to their Asian Games campaign. Their route to the medal included a semifinal appearance, but India ended their gold-medal hopes with a 124-run victory.
Rather than allowing that defeat to define their tournament, Sri Lanka responded with a disciplined performance against Bangladesh. Their batting recovery and clinical bowling ultimately secured third place.
A Complete Team Performance
Although Ratnayake's innings provided the turning point, Sri Lanka's victory was built on contributions throughout the team. Arachchige's stabilising innings, followed by four bowlers taking two wickets apiece, ensured Bangladesh could not recover.
The 165/9 total initially looked challenging but not unreachable. Sri Lanka's bowlers made sure it became more than enough, restricting Bangladesh to 102 and sealing the bronze medal with 15 balls remaining.
Bangladesh Left to Reflect on Missed Opportunity
Bangladesh had reached the semifinal stage after their quarterfinal against Malaysia was washed out, but their gold-medal hopes ended against Pakistan in a rain-reduced semifinal.
The bronze-medal match offered another opportunity to finish the tournament with a victory. However, their top-order collapse and inability to handle Sri Lanka's bowling pressure left them short of the target.
For Sri Lanka, the 63-run win provided a memorable finish and ensured they returned from the men's cricket competition with a medal.
