Ranji Trophy Plate 2026-27

Ayush Mhatre Named Mumbai Vice-Captain as Suryakumar Yadav Misses Ranji Opener

Mumbai have named 19-year-old Ayush Mhatre as vice-captain for their Ranji Trophy opener against Chandigarh, while Suryakumar Yadav has been left out despite making himself available. Chief selector Rajesh Pawar said Suryakumar needs more red-ball cricket after an 18-month gap. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been included in Mumbai's 16-member squad.

Ayush Mhatre Named Mumbai Vice-Captain as Suryakumar Yadav Misses Ranji Opener

Mumbai have handed young batter Ayush Mhatre a significant leadership responsibility by naming him vice-captain for their opening Ranji Trophy fixture of the 2026-27 season.

The 19-year-old, who led India to the Under-19 World Cup title earlier this year, has been identified as a potential future leader for Mumbai. His appointment comes alongside the notable omission of Suryakumar Yadav, who had made himself available for the season opener but was not included in the 16-member squad.

Mumbai will begin their campaign against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium from October 11.

Mhatre Given Leadership Responsibility

Mhatre's appointment as vice-captain is viewed as part of Mumbai's longer-term leadership planning. Despite having only 13 first-class appearances over the last two years, the young batter has already gained significant leadership experience at age-group level.

He captained India to the Under-19 World Cup title earlier in 2026, strengthening his credentials as one of the country's promising young leaders.

Mumbai selectors now want to give him exposure to senior domestic leadership alongside captain Siddhesh Lad.

Suryakumar Left Out Despite Availability

Suryakumar Yadav is the biggest name missing from Mumbai's squad. The former India T20I captain had indicated that he was available for the Ranji Trophy opener, but the selection committee decided against including him.

Mumbai chief selector Rajesh Pawar explained that the decision was primarily related to Suryakumar's lack of recent red-ball cricket.

Suryakumar has not played a first-class match for around 18 months. His last red-ball appearance came for Mumbai against Vidarbha in February 2025.

Selectors Want Suryakumar to Regain Red-Ball Rhythm

Pawar stressed that the omission does not mean Suryakumar has been permanently removed from Mumbai's plans.

The selectors believe the experienced batter should first play several red-ball matches and regain the rhythm required for the longer format before returning to the Ranji side.

That approach reflects the selectors' emphasis on match practice rather than reputation when selecting the opening squad.

Jaiswal Included in the Squad

While Suryakumar was left out, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been included after making himself available for the first match.

Jaiswal's selection gives Mumbai a major boost at the top of the order and also provides the batter with valuable first-class match practice ahead of India's upcoming Test commitments.

However, the squad has been announced only for the opening fixture because Jaiswal could potentially be involved with India's senior or A side later in the month.

Siddhesh Lad to Lead Mumbai

Siddhesh Lad has been appointed Mumbai's captain for the season opener. The experienced batter will lead a squad containing several players with significant domestic and international experience.

Alongside Jaiswal and Mhatre, the squad includes Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer Khan, Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian.

The combination gives Mumbai considerable batting depth while also providing several players who have already played important roles in domestic cricket.

Sarfaraz Returns After Irani Cup

Sarfaraz Khan has been included after recently representing Rest of India in the Irani Cup victory over Jammu & Kashmir.

His presence adds another experienced red-ball batter to Mumbai's middle order. Sarfaraz has been one of Mumbai's most prolific performers in domestic cricket and remains an important part of their first-class setup.

His recent Irani Cup involvement also means he enters the Ranji season with match exposure.

Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian Add All-Round Depth

Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian provide Mumbai with two valuable spin-bowling all-rounders. Both have considerable experience in domestic cricket and can contribute in multiple phases of a first-class match.

Mulani recently impressed for India A against Australia A in the unofficial Test series, while Kotian remains one of Mumbai's established domestic performers.

Their presence gives captain Lad additional options with both bat and ball.

Shardul Thakur Unavailable

Mumbai will be without former captain Shardul Thakur for the opening matches after he suffered a fracture to his right middle finger during training.

Chief selector Pawar indicated that Thakur could miss at least the first two matches of the campaign.

His absence removes an experienced seam-bowling all-rounder from Mumbai's options, making the contributions of the other all-rounders even more important.

Mhatre Returns After Injury Layoff

Mhatre's appointment is particularly notable because he has only recently returned to competitive cricket following a hamstring injury suffered during IPL 2026 while playing for Chennai Super Kings.

He was sidelined for almost five months before returning to action. Both Mhatre and Lad subsequently cleared fitness tests and appeared in the Kanga League as part of their preparation.

Mhatre will now move directly into a leadership role as he begins another important phase of his development.

Divyansh Saxena Earns a Recall

Opener Divyansh Saxena has also returned to Mumbai's Ranji squad after strong performances in the preseason competitions.

Saxena was part of India's 2020 Under-19 World Cup squad alongside Jaiswal and now gets another opportunity to establish himself in Mumbai's senior red-ball setup.

His inclusion gives Mumbai another opening option and additional depth ahead of the campaign.

Mumbai's 16-Man Squad

Mumbai's squad for the Chandigarh match consists of Siddhesh Lad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ayush Mhatre, Divyansh Saxena, Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Suved Parkar, Aakash Anand, Hardik Tamore, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Awasthi, Sylvester Dsouza and Onkar Tarmale.

The squad combines established domestic performers with several younger players, reflecting Mumbai's attempt to balance immediate competitiveness with longer-term development.

Opening Challenge Against Chandigarh

Mumbai's first assignment will be against Chandigarh in a four-day Ranji Trophy fixture beginning October 11 at the Wankhede Stadium.

The match will provide the first indication of how the new leadership structure functions, particularly with Mhatre working alongside Lad and several experienced senior players.

For the young vice-captain, it will also be an important opportunity to translate his successful age-group leadership into senior domestic cricket.

Suryakumar's Ranji Future Remains Open

Although Suryakumar has missed the opening match, the selectors have not closed the door on his return. The message from Mumbai is that he needs to build a red-ball base before being reconsidered.

That leaves the possibility of Suryakumar returning later in the season if he gets sufficient first-class cricket under his belt.

For now, however, Mumbai have chosen to prioritise players with recent red-ball exposure while giving Mhatre a prominent role in the team's leadership structure.

A New Generation Takes Centre Stage

The decision to name Mhatre vice-captain alongside the omission of Suryakumar represents an interesting shift in Mumbai's approach to the new Ranji season.

The team still contains experienced names such as Jaiswal, Sarfaraz and Mulani, but the selectors are also investing in younger players who could become central to Mumbai cricket in the coming years.

Mhatre's elevation is perhaps the clearest example of that strategy, with the Under-19 World Cup-winning captain now being prepared for a bigger role in senior cricket.
