Sourav Ganguly Takes Charge as Delhi Capitals Head Coach Ahead of IPL 2027
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed Delhi Capitals head coach for IPL 2027, replacing Hemang Badani after his two-season tenure. Ganguly has been part of the Capitals setup since 2019 and has held several leadership roles within the franchise. His first priorities will include finalising the support staff and preparing for the retention deadline and mini-auction.

Sourav Ganguly has returned to the Delhi Capitals setup in a new role, taking over as the franchise's head coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season.
The former India captain replaces Hemang Badani, who served as head coach for the previous two seasons. Ganguly's appointment marks his first stint as an IPL head coach and adds another major coaching responsibility to his long association with the Delhi Capitals organisation.
Ganguly Returns to the Capitals' Dugout
Ganguly's relationship with the Delhi Capitals franchise dates back to 2019, when he joined the organisation as an advisor.
He subsequently moved into broader leadership positions within the Capitals setup, including serving as Director of Cricket for both the men's and women's teams. His familiarity with the franchise's owners, management, support staff and players was an important factor in his return to a more hands-on role.
After stepping into the coaching position, Ganguly will now be responsible for translating that organisational experience into results on the field.
Hemang Badani's Two-Year Tenure Ends
Ganguly takes over from Hemang Badani, who had been in charge of Delhi Capitals for the previous two IPL seasons.
Delhi finished sixth in IPL 2026 under the Axar Patel-Badani combination after also missing the playoffs in 2025. The franchise has therefore decided to make a change in its coaching leadership as it prepares for another attempt to challenge for its first IPL championship.
The coaching change is one of several decisions Delhi will need to make before the 2027 season begins.
Ganguly Wants a Strong and Fearless Team
Ganguly said he is looking forward to working with the squad and described Delhi Capitals as a franchise close to his heart.
His immediate vision is to build a strong and fearless team. Having worked with many of the players and members of the support structure previously, Ganguly enters the position with an understanding of the franchise's existing environment.
The challenge now is to turn that familiarity into a more consistent performance across the IPL season.
Delhi Still Searching for Their First IPL Title
Delhi Capitals remain one of the original IPL franchises yet to win the competition. Punjab Kings are the only other original franchise still without an IPL title.
Delhi came closest in 2020, when they reached their first IPL final but lost the championship match. The following season they finished at the top of the league table but failed to reach the final.
The franchise has not qualified for the playoffs since that 2021 campaign.
A New Attempt to End the Trophy Wait
Ganguly's appointment is therefore part of a wider attempt to change Delhi's recent fortunes. The franchise has produced competitive squads over the years but has struggled to maintain consistency when the pressure of the latter stages arrives.
The new head coach will have to help establish a clear playing identity while ensuring that the squad is balanced enough to handle injuries, form fluctuations and the demands of a long T20 season.
Ganguly's Experience Beyond Coaching
Although IPL head coaching will be a new role for Ganguly, he brings extensive experience from different areas of the sport.
As India's captain, he helped lead the national team through a major transition period. He later served as BCCI president and subsequently continued working within franchise cricket through the Capitals organisation.
His combination of playing, leadership and administrative experience gives him a different background from a coach whose career has been limited to team management.
Success With Pretoria Capitals
More recently, Ganguly served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the SA20. During that stint, he guided the franchise to the final earlier in 2026.
The experience gave Ganguly a more direct coaching role in franchise T20 cricket before his appointment with Delhi Capitals.
His move to Delhi therefore represents a continuation of his transition from cricket administration and franchise management into hands-on coaching.
First Priority: Build the Support Staff
One of Ganguly's immediate responsibilities will be to finalise his coaching and support staff.
The franchise's coaching structure will need to be settled before preparations for IPL 2027 intensify. The new head coach will also work with the management team on player retention and squad construction.
Those decisions will shape the group Ganguly inherits for the upcoming season.
Retention Decisions Loom
Delhi Capitals will also need to finalise their retained players ahead of the IPL 2027 retention deadline on November 15.
The arrival of a new head coach gives Ganguly an opportunity to influence the squad-building process from the beginning. Decisions around which players form the core of the team will be particularly important given the franchise's recent failure to reach the playoffs.
IPL 2027 Mini-Auction in Goa
The next major stage will be the IPL 2027 mini-auction, scheduled to take place in Goa in mid-December.
Ganguly and the Delhi Capitals management will need to identify the areas where the squad requires strengthening before entering the auction. The franchise will also have to balance immediate requirements with the longer-term development of its playing group.
The auction strategy will be one of Ganguly's first major tests in his new role.
JSW to Manage Capitals for the Next Two Years
The Delhi Capitals franchise operates under a split ownership structure involving JSW and GMR. The JSW group will manage the Capitals for the next two years.
JSW Sports founder and Delhi Capitals chairman Parth Jindal welcomed Ganguly's appointment and described him as an integral part of the Capitals family.
The franchise's management believes Ganguly's leadership and experience can help Delhi mount a stronger challenge for the IPL title.
Ganguly's Long-Term Challenge
The immediate objective will be to improve Delhi's IPL results, but Ganguly's larger challenge will be to create consistency within the franchise.
Delhi have experienced several changes in leadership and coaching over recent seasons. Establishing a stable cricketing philosophy and giving players clear roles could be central to reversing that trend.
Ganguly's previous familiarity with the franchise may help him implement that approach more quickly.
A New Chapter for Delhi Capitals
Ganguly's appointment brings together two sides of his cricket career: leadership and franchise management. He now has the opportunity to build a team from the coaching chair rather than from the administrator's office.
Delhi Capitals have a strong history of reaching competitive stages but are still waiting for their first IPL title. With the 2027 auction and retention decisions approaching, Ganguly's first months in the role will be crucial.
The new head coach now has the task of turning a familiar franchise into a team capable of finally making another sustained run at the IPL trophy.
