India tour of New Zealand 2026

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns to India’s T20I Squad After Four-Year Absence

Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has earned a surprise India T20I recall for the five-match New Zealand series after nearly four years away from the national side. The 36-year-old’s outstanding IPL 2026 campaign, in which he claimed 28 wickets for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has helped bring him back into the international setup.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns to India’s T20I Squad After Four-Year Absence

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in the India T20I setup after nearly four years away from international cricket. The 36-year-old fast bowler has been included in India's 16-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

The recall marks a significant return for one of India's most experienced white-ball bowlers. Bhuvneshwar's last appearance for India came against New Zealand in November 2022, and he will now have another opportunity to represent the national team against the same opposition.

Four-Year Wait Comes to an End

Bhuvneshwar last played for India during the 2022 tour of New Zealand shortly after the T20 World Cup. Since then, he has remained active mainly in domestic T20 cricket and the Indian Premier League.

His return comes after a particularly productive IPL 2026 season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He claimed 28 wickets during the campaign and finished with an economy rate of 7.95, playing an important role in RCB's successful season.

IPL Form Opens the Door

The veteran pacer's performances in the IPL appear to have played a major role in bringing him back into the selectors' plans. His ability to swing the new ball, control the powerplay and deliver accurately at different stages remains a valuable part of his skill set.

Bhuvneshwar was also part of RCB's successful back-to-back IPL campaigns and finished the 2026 season just one wicket behind Kagiso Rabada in the race for the Purple Cap.

New Zealand Provides a Familiar Setting

There is an interesting connection to Bhuvneshwar's international comeback. His previous India appearance also came in New Zealand, meaning his return to the national side will take place against the same opponent.

The first T20I of the upcoming series is scheduled for October 22 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The series will then continue through Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton.

Why Bhuvneshwar's Skills Could Matter

New Zealand conditions can offer assistance to swing bowlers, particularly with the new ball. Bhuvneshwar's ability to move the ball both ways and maintain control in the powerplay gives India an experienced option alongside Arshdeep Singh and the younger pace resources in the squad.

The selectors have retained a largely unchanged T20I group, making Bhuvneshwar the most notable addition to the bowling attack.

A 16-Member India Squad

Shreyas Iyer will continue as India's T20I captain, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain. The batting group includes Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan and the captain himself.

Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir provide all-round options, while Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav add further pace-bowling depth.

Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav complete the main bowling options.

Varun Chakaravarthy Also Returns

Bhuvneshwar is not the only experienced bowler returning to the squad. Varun Chakaravarthy has also been recalled after missing India's recent matches because of a side strain.

Chakaravarthy last played against Afghanistan in Delhi before the injury ruled him out of the one-off T20I against Japan and the Asian Games. He returns at the expense of Ravi Bishnoi.

Bumrah Given T20I Rest

Jasprit Bumrah has not been included in the T20I squad for the New Zealand tour. His absence is expected to help India manage his workload ahead of the two-Test series that will follow the white-ball matches.

The decision also gives Bhuvneshwar and the other pace options an opportunity to take greater responsibility during the five-match series.

Could Bhuvneshwar's Return Go Beyond T20Is?

The immediate recall is for T20I cricket, but Bhuvneshwar's performances have also raised questions about whether he could be considered for a wider white-ball role.

India are preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Bhuvneshwar's experience could potentially be useful in those conditions, although his ability to handle the workload of ODI cricket will need to be assessed.

His recent domestic workload has been concentrated mainly around T20 cricket, so the New Zealand assignment could provide the team management with more information about his current fitness and effectiveness at international level.

A Second Chance at the International Level

Bhuvneshwar's return is significant because it comes at an age when many players have already moved away from international cricket. His performances in the IPL have demonstrated that he still possesses the bowling skills required to compete at the highest level.

However, the New Zealand series will ultimately determine how effectively he can translate that form back into international cricket.

Five T20Is Await

India and New Zealand will play five T20Is between October 22 and November 1. The opening two matches will be played in Christchurch before the teams move to Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton.

For Bhuvneshwar, the series represents the end of a long international absence and a chance to show that his successful IPL campaigns were not simply a domestic resurgence.

India's New Zealand T20I Schedule

The first T20I will be played in Christchurch on October 22, followed by the second match at the same venue on October 24. The third T20I is scheduled for Wellington on October 27, with Auckland hosting the fourth on October 30.

The series will conclude in Hamilton on November 1. India's five-match campaign will also provide an important opportunity to assess combinations ahead of the next phase of the team's white-ball preparations.

Bhuvneshwar's International Comeback Begins

After almost four years away, Bhuvneshwar Kumar once again has an India shirt within reach. His recall rewards a highly productive IPL season and gives India another experienced fast-bowling option.

Whether this becomes a short international return or the beginning of another chapter in his India career will depend on his performances and fitness. For now, the veteran pacer has earned another opportunity at the highest level.
