West Indies tour of India, 2026•1st T20I

Shreyas Iyer’s Maiden T20I Century Powers India to Eight-Wicket Win Over West Indies

Shreyas Iyer produced a stunning unbeaten 102 off 43 balls to guide India to an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the first T20I in Lucknow. After India slipped to 35/2, Iyer combined with Ishan Kishan for an unbeaten 137-run partnership as India chased 172 in just 14.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Shreyas Iyer’s Maiden T20I Century Powers India to Eight-Wicket Win Over West Indies

Shreyas Iyer delivered a captain's performance in Lucknow, smashing his maiden T20I century as India began their five-match series against West Indies with a commanding eight-wicket victory.

Chasing 172 after West Indies were bowled out for 171, India initially lost Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson inside the first four overs. But Iyer took control of the chase, producing an unbeaten 102 from 43 balls to take India home with 32 balls to spare.

Iyer Produces a Statement Innings

Iyer walked in with India at 35/2 and initially focused on settling into the innings. Once he became comfortable with the conditions, the India captain dramatically accelerated the scoring rate.

His unbeaten 102 contained 10 fours and six sixes. He reached his century from only 42 balls, making it the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian batter against West Indies.

The century was also Iyer's first in T20I cricket and his highest score in the format, surpassing his previous best of 80 not out.

Record-Breaking T20I Century

Iyer's hundred placed him alongside an elite group of Indian T20I captains. He became only the third Indian captain to score a men's T20I century, after Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.

He also became the first Indian captain to score a T20I century while chasing. His 42-ball hundred was the second-fastest T20I century by an Indian captain, behind Rohit Sharma's 35-ball effort against Sri Lanka in 2017.

Ishan Kishan Provides Perfect Support

Ishan Kishan played an important supporting role during India's successful chase. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 37 from 27 balls as he and Iyer added an unbroken 137-run partnership for the third wicket.

The partnership completely changed the momentum of the chase. India had been under some pressure at 35/2, but Iyer and Kishan ensured West Indies were unable to create another opening.

Iyer eventually sealed the match with a single, taking India to 172/2 in 14.4 overs.

India Lose Early Wickets

India's chase did not begin as smoothly as the final result suggested. Abhishek Sharma provided an early burst before falling for 21 from 10 balls to Roston Chase.

Sanju Samson departed soon afterwards for 11, leaving India at 35/2. West Indies' spinners had initially managed to slow the scoring, but Iyer's arrival changed the course of the innings.

By the end of the Powerplay, India had reached 62/2, and the required run rate was already under control.

Iyer Changes Gears After the Powerplay

The turning point came when Iyer began attacking the West Indies seamers. Romario Shepherd conceded 19 runs in one over as Iyer found the boundary repeatedly.

After bringing up his half-century from 28 balls, Iyer moved through the gears rapidly. He struck boundaries against Akeal Hosein before taking apart Matthew Forde in the 14th over.

Three sixes and a four in that over took him rapidly towards three figures before he completed his century by launching Roston Chase over long-on.

Naman Dhir Makes Dream T20I Debut

Earlier, India debutant Naman Dhir played a major role with the ball. The all-rounder claimed 3/31 as West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs.

Dhir's performance provided an immediate impact on his international debut. He dismissed Shai Hope, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer to help India regain control during the middle and late stages of the innings.

Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets, while Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh also contributed to the bowling effort.

West Indies Make a Fast Start

West Indies began aggressively after being asked to bat first. Shai Hope found the boundary regularly during the opening overs, while Kamil Pooran also looked dangerous before Arshdeep Singh provided India's first breakthrough.

Hope continued to attack alongside Sherfane Rutherford after early wickets disrupted the visitors. The pair built a crucial partnership and temporarily put West Indies in a strong position.

Hope and Rutherford Lead the Recovery

Rutherford was particularly aggressive against India's spin attack, hitting Kuldeep Yadav for two sixes in the ninth over. He later attacked Axar Patel to keep the scoring rate high.

Hope reached his half-century from 36 balls before falling for 52 from 37 deliveries. Rutherford continued the fight and top-scored for West Indies with 56 from 34 balls.

However, India's bowlers struck repeatedly after the Hope-Rutherford partnership was broken. West Indies slipped from 107/3 to 135/8 before late runs from Rutherford and Akeal Hosein pushed the total beyond 170.

India's Bowlers Finish Strongly

Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets while Axar Patel also made important breakthroughs. Mayank Yadav, returning to the side after an injury lay-off, eventually dismissed Rutherford after the left-hander completed his half-century.

Axar removed Hosein in the final over, leaving West Indies all out for 171 with five balls remaining.

India Extend T20I Winning Run

The victory extended India's winning streak in men's T20I cricket to 10 matches. It also gave Iyer a strong start to his tenure as India's T20I captain against West Indies.

The result means India lead the five-match series 1-0, with the second T20I scheduled to be played in Ranchi on October 9.

A Perfect Start After the Asian Games

Iyer's century came only a few days after he captained India to the men's cricket gold medal at the Asian Games. The quick turnaround from Japan to Lucknow made his performance even more notable.

Despite the demanding schedule and limited recovery time, Iyer adapted quickly to the conditions and produced the defining innings of the match.

India Take Early Series Advantage

India's victory was built around two contrasting performances: Dhir's impressive debut with the ball and Iyer's spectacular finish with the bat.

West Indies had moments of control after reducing India to 35/2, but Iyer's counterattack removed any uncertainty from the chase. His maiden T20I century ultimately turned a potentially competitive target into a comfortable victory.

With India now 1-0 ahead, the second T20I in Ranchi will give West Indies an opportunity to respond, while Iyer and his side will look to strengthen their advantage in the series.
