Zimbabwe Women tour of India 2026•2nd T20I

Shafali Verma Receives ICC Reprimand After Dropped Catch Against Zimbabwe

India opener Shafali Verma has received an official reprimand and one demerit point for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20I against Zimbabwe. The incident followed a dropped catch in the 12th over. Despite the disciplinary action, Shafali starred with an unbeaten 55 off 25 balls as India won by nine wickets.

Shafali Verma Receives ICC Reprimand After Dropped Catch Against Zimbabwe

India women's team opener and T20I vice-captain Shafali Verma has been officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching its Code of Conduct during the second T20I against Zimbabwe in Raipur on October 18, 2026. The incident occurred after she dropped a catch during Zimbabwe's innings and threw the ball into the ground in frustration.

The ICC imposed one demerit point on the Indian batter for the incident, which was classified as a Level 1 offence. The disciplinary action came on a day when Shafali made a major contribution with the bat, helping India secure a convincing victory and take an unassailable lead in the three-match series.

What Happened During Zimbabwe's Innings?

The incident took place in the 12th over of Zimbabwe's innings. Shree Charani bowled to Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, who lofted the ball towards mid-off, where Shafali was stationed. Shafali failed to hold the catch, and the ball struck her jaw before falling to the ground.

Frustrated by the missed opportunity, Shafali threw the ball into the ground. Match officials subsequently charged her with a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

The relevant provision was Article 2.2, which concerns the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match. The rule applies to conduct involving equipment on the field, even when the reaction follows a mistake during play.

ICC Confirms Official Reprimand and Demerit Point

Match referee G.S. Lakshmi imposed the sanction after the incident was reviewed. Shafali admitted the offence and accepted the proposed penalty, meaning a formal hearing was not required.

The reprimand was accompanied by one demerit point, marking her first offence under the relevant disciplinary record during the preceding 24-month period. Under the ICC's rules, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and can also attract a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

The action is a formal disciplinary measure rather than a suspension. However, players are expected to maintain appropriate behaviour on the field, including when mistakes or missed opportunities lead to frustration.

Shafali Responds With a Match-Winning Fifty

Despite the incident, Shafali delivered an outstanding performance with the bat during India's chase. The right-hander smashed an unbeaten 55 from just 25 deliveries, using her aggressive stroke play to put Zimbabwe's bowlers under immediate pressure.

She found excellent support from India captain Smriti Mandhana, who also remained unbeaten with 47 from 25 balls. The pair added 96 runs for the opening wicket, ensuring that India needed little time to complete the chase.

India had been set a target of 103 after Zimbabwe finished their innings at 102/8 in 20 overs. The hosts reached the target in only 8.5 overs, winning by nine wickets and taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

India Seal the Series With a Game to Spare

The victory confirmed India's series win ahead of the third and final T20I. After a closely contested opening match, India produced a much more dominant performance in Raipur, combining effective bowling with an explosive opening partnership.

Zimbabwe struggled to build a substantial total, while India's batters attacked confidently from the start of the chase. Shafali's unbeaten fifty was particularly important after she had managed only four runs in the first T20I.

Her response with the bat demonstrated how quickly a player can move past a difficult moment in the field. Although the dropped catch and subsequent reaction attracted disciplinary attention, her batting contribution played a central role in securing India's victory.

A Reminder About On-Field Conduct

Shafali's reprimand serves as a reminder that players are expected to control their reactions during international matches. Competitive cricket naturally involves pressure, and dropped catches can be frustrating, but the ICC's conduct rules apply throughout the game.

For India, the immediate focus will be on completing the series strongly and maintaining their momentum. For Shafali, the incident adds a disciplinary note to an otherwise productive outing, in which her attacking fifty helped India secure a comfortable win against Zimbabwe.
