Ishan Kishan Ruled Out of Second T20I Against New Zealand; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Contention
India have suffered an injury setback ahead of the second T20I against New Zealand, with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan ruled out due to a low-grade right adductor strain sustained during the series opener. With India leading 1–0 after a four-wicket victory, teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as a strong contender for a place in the playing XI.

India will be without Ishan Kishan for the second T20I against New Zealand after the wicketkeeper-batter was ruled out with a low-grade strain to his right adductor muscle. The injury occurred during the opening match of the five-game series, leaving the Indian team management with a selection decision ahead of Saturday's encounter in Christchurch.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that its medical team is monitoring Kishan's recovery. No specific return date has been announced, leaving his availability for the remaining matches dependent on his progress.
Groin Injury Affects India's Batting Plans
Kishan's injury also explains India's batting-order adjustment during the first T20I. The left-hander was originally expected to play a more prominent role in the top order, but Tilak Varma moved up to No. 3 while Kishan came in at No. 5.
Kishan managed just one run from three deliveries in the series opener before being dismissed. Despite his brief contribution, India completed a successful chase of New Zealand's 225-run total, winning by four wickets with two balls remaining.
India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that Kishan's fitness had influenced the change in the batting order. With the batter unavailable for the second match, India must now decide how best to maintain the balance of a side that started the series with a victory.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Emerges as a Strong Option
The absence of Kishan could create an opportunity for teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is part of India's T20I squad. Kotak indicated that the youngster is among the strongest candidates to come into the side if Kishan cannot play.
Sooryavanshi has attracted attention with his aggressive approach and ability to score quickly. However, he has not featured in India's recent T20I playing XI, with the team continuing to back established top-order options Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
The team management must now consider where Sooryavanshi would fit into the batting order. Kishan batted at No. 5 in the opening match, while Sooryavanshi is more accustomed to opening. India could adjust the order to accommodate the teenager, or consider another combination depending on the team's tactical requirements.
All-rounder Shivam Dube is another option available to India, although selecting him would offer a different balance to the side because of his medium-pace bowling. The final decision will depend on the team's assessment of its batting needs and overall combination.
India Look to Build on Series-Opening Victory
India head into the second T20I with confidence after chasing down 226 in the first match at Hagley Oval. Sanju Samson led the charge with an attacking 67 off 33 balls, while Naman Dhir provided a decisive finish with an unbeaten 42 from just 15 deliveries. Shreyas Iyer also contributed with a valuable innings of 42.
The victory gave India a 1–0 lead in the five-match series, but Kishan's absence presents a fresh challenge. The team will want to preserve its momentum while ensuring that the replacement fits comfortably into the batting order.
Second T20I: Date and Venue
The second T20I between New Zealand and India is scheduled for October 24, 2026, at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The teams will then travel to Wellington for the third match on October 27, followed by fixtures in Auckland and Hamilton.
With Kishan ruled out of the second game and his return date still uncertain, attention will be on India's final team combination. Sooryavanshi has a genuine opportunity to enter the playing XI, but his selection should not be treated as confirmed until the team announces its lineup.
