Devdutt Padikkal produced a remarkable innings of 199 while Sai Sudharsan scored 91 to revive India A against New Zealand A in the first unofficial Test at Lincoln. After being dismissed for just 113 in their first innings and conceding a 204-run lead, India A responded strongly in their second innings, moving into a commanding position through crucial partnerships.

Devdutt Padikkal Misses Double Century by One Run as India A Fight Back in New Zealand

India A produced a stunning turnaround against New Zealand A in the first unofficial Test at Lincoln, led by an outstanding innings from Devdutt Padikkal. The left-handed batter scored 199, falling just one run short of a double century, while Sai Sudharsan contributed a composed 91 as the visitors recovered from a difficult start to take control of the contest on Day 3.

The recovery came after India A had endured a disappointing first innings, managing only 113 runs. New Zealand A replied with 317, securing a substantial first-innings lead of 204 runs and putting the visitors under pressure. However, Padikkal and Sudharsan helped transform the match with a determined batting effort in India's second innings.

Padikkal Leads India's Remarkable Recovery

Padikkal continued from his overnight score of 56 not out and went on to produce one of the finest innings of his first-class career. He scored 199 from 248 deliveries, striking 24 boundaries and three sixes. His innings combined patience with attacking strokeplay, allowing India A to recover from early trouble and build a substantial total.

The Karnataka batter looked increasingly comfortable as his innings progressed, finding boundaries against both pace and spin. His performance was particularly important after India A's top order struggled in the first innings and the team found itself facing a large deficit.

Padikkal came agonisingly close to a double century but was dismissed on 199, just one run short of the milestone. Despite missing out on the landmark, his innings changed the momentum of the match and gave India A a realistic opportunity to dictate the remainder of the contest.

Sai Sudharsan Provides Crucial Support

Sai Sudharsan played a vital supporting role, scoring 91 as he and Padikkal added 215 runs for the third wicket. Their partnership was the turning point for India A after the team lost both openers early in the second innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul had both departed cheaply, leaving India A struggling at 10 for two. Jaiswal fell for five, while Rahul was dismissed hit-wicket for four. The early wickets threatened another collapse, but Padikkal and Sudharsan responded with patience and disciplined shot selection.

Sudharsan showed determination against a probing New Zealand A attack, occupying the crease and helping India A rebuild. His 91-run contribution ended just short of a century, but the partnership with Padikkal ensured that the visitors moved from a vulnerable position to one of strength.

Yash Rathod Helps Extend India's Advantage

After Sudharsan's dismissal, Padikkal continued to accelerate the recovery alongside Yash Rathod. The pair added another 142 runs, strengthening India's position and pushing the overall lead beyond New Zealand A's first-innings advantage.

Padikkal's dismissal at 199 ended a marathon effort that had revived India's innings. His contribution, combined with the partnerships involving Sudharsan and Rathod, helped India A reach 368 for four in their second innings. With their first-innings score included, India A moved to an overall lead of 164 runs over New Zealand A.

New Zealand A Had Earlier Built a Strong Lead

New Zealand A had taken command of the match after bowling India A out for 113 in the first innings. Simon Keene was among the standout performers with the ball, claiming five wickets, while Zak Gibson took three.

In response, the hosts scored 317. Captain Rhys Mariu made 76, while Dean Foxcroft contributed 51. Kristian Clarke and other middle- and lower-order batters also added valuable runs, helping New Zealand A secure a 204-run lead.

For India A, Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi claimed three wickets each. However, the visitors' first-innings batting failure left them with considerable ground to make up before Padikkal and Sudharsan's second-innings performance changed the direction of the game.

Selection Competition Ahead of India's Test Assignments

The match also provides an important opportunity for batters competing for places in India's Test plans. Padikkal and Sudharsan are both seeking to strengthen their cases with performances in challenging conditions, while the low scores from Jaiswal and Rahul in the match's early stages have added scrutiny to India's top-order preparations.

One unofficial Test cannot determine future selection decisions on its own, but Padikkal's 199 and Sudharsan's 91 are significant performances. Their ability to rebuild after losing early wickets and then establish a substantial advantage will give the team management plenty to assess.

India A Turn the Match Around

India A's second-innings response has dramatically changed the outlook of the contest. After trailing by 204 runs following the first innings, the visitors built a 164-run overall lead by reaching 368 for four, with Padikkal narrowly missing a double century and Sudharsan falling nine runs short of a hundred.

New Zealand A had been firmly in control after the first two innings, but India A's batting resilience has put pressure back on the hosts. Padikkal's near-double century stands out as the defining performance so far, while Sudharsan's contribution ensured the recovery was built on a strong partnership rather than an individual effort alone.
