Ishan Kishan Ruled Out of Wellington T20I Despite Recovery Progress; India Eye Series Win
Ishan Kishan is recovering well from a low-grade right adductor strain but has been ruled out of India's third T20I against New Zealand in Wellington on October 27. The wicketkeeper-batter has not yet regained match fitness, the BCCI confirmed. Kumar Kushagra will remain with the squad, while India, leading the five-match series 2–0, will look to secure the series with another victory.

India have received a fresh update on Ishan Kishan's recovery, but the wicketkeeper-batter will remain unavailable for the third T20I against New Zealand in Wellington. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Monday that Kishan is recovering well from a low-grade right adductor strain but has yet to regain the match fitness required to return to international cricket.
The third T20I is scheduled to take place at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on October 27, 2026. Kishan will miss the match after also sitting out the second T20I in Christchurch. India currently lead the five-match series 2–0 and have an opportunity to secure the series with a win in Wellington.
BCCI Confirms Kishan Is Improving
According to the BCCI's update, Kishan sustained the injury during the opening T20I of the series against New Zealand. The medical team continues to monitor his progress as he works towards a return to full fitness.
Although the latest update offers encouragement about his recovery, the team management has chosen not to rush him back into action. A right adductor strain affects the muscles on the inner side of the thigh and can interfere with running, changing direction and other movements required during a match.
India's bowling coach Morne Morkel also indicated that Kishan was improving but would not be available for selection for the Wellington fixture. His absence is therefore a fitness decision rather than confirmation of a longer-term setback.
Kishan Has Missed Two Consecutive Matches
Kishan sustained the injury during India's first T20I against New Zealand and was subsequently ruled out of the second match. He has now been ruled out of the third game as well, extending his spell on the sidelines to two consecutive matches after the series opener.
His absence affects India's options in the top order and behind the stumps. Kishan is a left-handed batter who can provide an attacking start, while his wicketkeeping ability gives the team additional flexibility when selecting its combination.
India have managed to maintain their winning momentum without him. The team won the opening T20I by four wickets and followed it with another four-wicket victory in the second match, moving into a 2–0 lead in the series.
Kumar Kushagra Remains With the Squad
The BCCI confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra will continue to be part of the Indian squad for the third T20I. Kushagra was brought in as cover after Kishan's injury and will remain available to the team in Wellington.
His presence gives India another wicketkeeping option while the medical team continues to assess Kishan's recovery. However, remaining in the squad does not automatically guarantee a place in the playing XI, and India's final combination will be confirmed closer to the match.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Get Another Opportunity?
Teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi replaced Kishan in India's playing XI for the second T20I. The 15-year-old had a difficult outing, scoring four runs from eight deliveries, but could remain in contention for another opportunity while Kishan is unavailable.
Sooryavanshi's aggressive batting style has attracted considerable attention, and another appearance would give him an opportunity to adjust to international cricket. The team management must decide whether to retain the youngster or make another change to the batting order as India look to maintain their winning run.
Sanju Samson remains an important option in India's wicketkeeping and batting plans. The final selection will depend on the team's preferred combination, conditions in Wellington and the roles required from the top order.
India One Win Away From Securing the Series
India have made an excellent start to the five-match T20I series, winning both games by four wickets. The visitors successfully chased challenging targets in the opening two matches, demonstrating their ability to recover under pressure and finish games strongly.
New Zealand, meanwhile, will be keen to respond on home soil. A victory in Wellington would keep the hosts in contention, while another Indian win would give the visitors an unassailable 3–0 lead and clinch the series with two matches still remaining.
The third T20I will therefore be an important contest for both teams. India will aim to continue their winning momentum despite Kishan's absence, while New Zealand will look to prevent the series from slipping beyond their reach.
When Can Kishan Return?
The BCCI has not announced a specific return date for Kishan. His availability for the remaining T20Is will depend on how he responds to rehabilitation and when the medical team determines that he has regained match fitness.
The latest update is positive in terms of recovery, but it does not confirm that Kishan will be ready for the fourth or fifth T20I. India are expected to continue monitoring his progress rather than set a return deadline before he is fully fit.
For now, the focus remains on the Wellington match and India's opportunity to seal the series. Kishan's recovery will continue to be monitored, while Kumar Kushagra stays with the squad and the team management prepares its lineup for the third T20I.
