India tour of New Zealand 2026

Prasidh Krishna Faces Race Against Time for New Zealand ODIs as India Prioritise Test Fitness

Prasidh Krishna remains doubtful for India's ODI series against New Zealand as he awaits fitness clearance after a hamstring injury. Further match simulations are scheduled for November 1 and 2, with the team management keen to have him ready for the crucial two-Test series beginning November 19.

Prasidh Krishna Faces Race Against Time for New Zealand ODIs as India Prioritise Test Fitness

India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna faces a race against time to become available for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. The right-arm pacer has not yet received fitness clearance from the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) following a hamstring injury, leaving his participation in the white-ball leg of the tour uncertain.

Prasidh was conditionally selected for the first three ODIs, with his inclusion dependent on medical clearance. He is scheduled to undergo match simulations on November 1 and 2, just days before the series opener in Auckland on November 4. His availability for the opening match is therefore in serious doubt.

Further Fitness Tests Scheduled

The upcoming simulations will be important in assessing whether Prasidh can safely return to competitive cricket. He underwent an earlier match simulation on October 22, but he has not yet been cleared to resume playing.

Although his clinical recovery has reportedly progressed satisfactorily, he has experienced some apprehension during the rehabilitation process. The CoE medical team continues to monitor his response as his bowling workload is increased gradually.

The priority is to rebuild his match readiness without rushing the recovery. The medical staff are expected to assess his ability to complete the required bowling workload before recommending a return to competition.

Hamstring Injury Has Disrupted His Preparation

Prasidh has been out of action since September 30, when he sustained a hamstring injury during the second ODI against the West Indies. He has remained at the CoE for rehabilitation and fitness assessments while India prepare for the New Zealand tour.

The injury has disrupted his preparations for a demanding schedule. While he was named in the ODI squad for the first three matches, his selection was explicitly subject to fitness clearance. He was not included in the squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs.

India May Prioritise the Test Series

India's management is understood to be keen to have Prasidh available for the two-Test series against New Zealand. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill will be looking for a fully fit pace attack for a series that carries major significance in the 2025–27 World Test Championship campaign.

Given the importance of the Tests, India may decide against risking Prasidh in the ODIs even if he receives clearance to return. His workload and ability to sustain the demands of a five-day match will be central to the final decision.

There is no fitness-related condition attached to his name in India's announced Test squad, indicating that the team hopes he will be ready for the longer format. However, his participation will depend on the outcome of the remaining assessments and the medical team's recommendations.

Possible India A Match Before the Tests

If Prasidh clears the upcoming simulations, he could be considered for the third unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand, scheduled for November 6–9. A multi-day fixture could provide an opportunity to build his bowling workload before the senior team's Test series.

That option remains conditional on his fitness and the team's plans. The management must weigh the value of match practice against the risk of exposing him to competitive cricket before he is fully ready.

India's New Zealand Schedule

India's ODI series begins in Auckland on November 4, followed by matches on November 7 and November 10. The two-Test series then begins in Wellington on November 19, with the second Test scheduled to start in Christchurch on November 27.

The Test matches are particularly important for India's World Test Championship ambitions. The team will want its strongest available bowling attack, making Prasidh's recovery a key issue in the days ahead.

Prasidh's Return Remains Uncertain

Prasidh has become an important fast-bowling option for India across formats and has impressed with his ability to extract bounce and generate awkward angles. His availability would strengthen India's pace attack, particularly in New Zealand conditions.

For now, the focus remains on his fitness assessments on November 1 and 2. Until the CoE grants clearance, his participation in the ODI series cannot be confirmed. India are expected to take a cautious approach, with the Test series likely to remain the main priority as the team prepares for a crucial stretch of international cricket.
