Indian Premier League 2027

CSK Could Release ₹14.2 Crore Signing Prashant Veer to Boost Purse Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction

Chennai Super Kings may release Prashant Veer, their ₹14.2 crore signing from the IPL 2026 auction, to free up funds before the IPL 2027 auction in Goa on December 16. The 20-year-old all-rounder scored 90 runs and took no wickets in six matches. CSK have just ₹2.4 crore left, and may try to buy him back at a lower price.

CSK Could Release ₹14.2 Crore Signing Prashant Veer to Boost Purse Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are considering releasing young all-rounder Prashant Veer ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, according to reports. Veer was one of the franchise's two headline purchases at the IPL 2026 auction, where CSK paid ₹14.2 crore for the uncapped Uttar Pradesh player. However, after a modest first season, the five-time champions are weighing up whether to let him go in order to create more room in their auction purse.

The decision is not yet final, and CSK are not believed to be ready to move on from the 20-year-old entirely. If they do release him, the franchise could try to buy him back at a lower price when the auction takes place in Goa on December 16. All 10 IPL teams must submit their final retention and release lists by November 15.

A Record Price for an Uncapped Player

Veer became one of the biggest talking points of the IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi. CSK spent ₹14.2 crore to sign him, making him the joint-most expensive uncapped player in IPL history. The franchise paid the same amount for uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma, taking their combined spend on the two youngsters to ₹28.4 crore.

Veer, who was born in Amethi, is a left-arm spinning all-rounder. CSK identified him as a long-term replacement for Ravindra Jadeja, who left the franchise in the trade that sent him and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson.

The young all-rounder earned the big contract after impressive performances in domestic cricket. Before the auction, he scored 320 runs at a strike rate of around 155 and took eight wickets in the UP T20 League, displaying the kind of all-round skills that attracted strong interest from franchises.

A Quiet First Season in Yellow

Veer's debut IPL season, however, did not go as CSK had hoped. He played six matches in IPL 2026, scoring 90 runs in five innings. His best score was 43 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which offered a glimpse of his ability with the bat.

With the ball, he went wicketless, and CSK used him only sparingly as a bowler. For a player bought partly to fill the spin-bowling all-rounder role left vacant by Jadeja, that was a significant disappointment, both for the player and the franchise.

Across his T20 career so far, Veer has played 15 matches, taking 12 wickets at an average of 18.75 and scoring his runs at a strike rate of about 150. Those numbers suggest he has talent, but his IPL returns did not justify such a large price tag in his first year.

Why CSK Need Funds

The main reason behind CSK's thinking is financial. The franchise currently has only ₹2.4 crore left in its purse. Every team will receive an additional ₹5 crore for the upcoming auction, which would take CSK's available funds to ₹7.4 crore. That is a small amount for a team that needs to rebuild after a disappointing campaign.

Releasing Veer would add ₹14.2 crore back to the purse, giving CSK more than ₹20 crore to spend at the auction. That would give the franchise much greater flexibility to target key players and strengthen the areas that let them down in 2026.

The approach of releasing a player and then attempting to re-sign him at a lower price is not uncommon in the IPL. It allows franchises to free up funds while still keeping the option of bringing back players they rate highly. However, it also carries risk, as other teams could bid for Veer if they believe in his potential.

For CSK, the challenge will be to judge how much other franchises value the young all-rounder. If several teams show interest, the price could rise quickly, and Chennai may have to decide how far they are willing to go to bring him back. If interest is limited, they could re-sign him at a fraction of his previous fee and use the savings elsewhere in the squad.

CSK's Disappointing 2026 Campaign

The need for change comes after a difficult IPL 2026 for Chennai. Under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the franchise finished eighth on the points table, winning six of their 14 matches and collecting 12 points. It meant CSK missed out on the playoffs once again.

The five-time champions last lifted the trophy in 2023 under MS Dhoni. Since then, they have struggled to find the consistency that once made them one of the most successful teams in the tournament's history.

The poor results have led to several changes behind the scenes, and the decision on Veer is part of a wider effort to reshape the squad for the 2027 season.

New Coaching Staff Under Zaheer Khan

CSK have already made major changes to their support staff. Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has taken over as head coach, and the new management group is expected to play a key role in deciding the retention list.

Albie Morkel has been appointed assistant coach, while Mohit Sharma has come in as bowling coach, replacing Eric Simons. The franchise has also parted ways with batting coach Michael Hussey after eight years, meaning CSK will not have a dedicated batting coach for IPL 2027.

Under Zaheer, the franchise is reportedly open to the idea of releasing Veer and then trying to buy him back for a smaller fee. This would allow the new coaching group to continue working with a young player they still believe in, without the burden of his current salary.

Kartik Sharma Made a Stronger Impression

While Veer struggled to make an impact, CSK's other big uncapped buy enjoyed a more productive season. Kartik Sharma, also 20, scored 295 runs in 11 matches at an average of 32.77. His highest score was 71 against Lucknow Super Giants.

Kartik's performances gave CSK some encouragement for the future and showed that investing in young Indian talent can bring returns. His stronger season also makes it more likely that CSK will retain him, while Veer's future remains uncertain.

Veer's Future Still Bright

Despite the difficult first season, Veer remains a promising young cricketer. He is only 20, and his record in domestic T20 cricket shows that he has the ability to contribute with both bat and ball. A full season of development, especially with his bowling, could help him become a valuable player in the years ahead.

The UP T20 League recently shared a clip of him striking the ball cleanly on social media, a reminder of the power-hitting ability that first caught the attention of IPL scouts.

Whether he stays at CSK or moves elsewhere, Veer is likely to attract interest at the auction if he is released. Teams looking for young Indian all-rounders could see him as a good investment at a lower price than he fetched last year.

Retention Deadline and Auction Ahead

CSK have not yet finalised their retention list, and the franchise will make its final decision before the November 15 deadline. The IPL 2027 auction will then be held in Goa on December 16, the last auction of the current cycle.

Elsewhere, other franchises are also finalising their plans. Punjab Kings, for example, are expected to hold on to South African all-rounder Marco Jansen, who is on a ₹7 crore deal, after he took nine wickets and scored 51 runs in 13 matches in IPL 2026.

For CSK, the next few weeks will be crucial. With a new coaching team in place and a squad in need of rebuilding, the decisions they make on players like Veer could shape their fortunes in IPL 2027.
